The International AI Serving Homeland Security and Safety Conference recently took place in Doha, Qatar, concluding with two insightful sessions on the various uses of artificial intelligence in security applications. The sessions, titled ‘Artificial Intelligence in Security Operations’ and ‘The Opportunities and Security Challenges in the Field of Artificial Intelligence,’ showcased numerous papers discussing how AI can enhance security measures.

One standout paper, ‘The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Security Field,’ shed light on the different AI applications that can support criminal investigations, police training, early warning systems, as well as the use of AI in Qatar’s air, land, and sea ports. It also delved into the advanced technologies utilized at Hamad International Airport and Hamad International Port, including innovative eye-scanning equipment and the development of robots for securing major events hosted by Qatar.

Another paper, ‘The Role of Police Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies Using AI,’ emphasized the need for international cooperation in achieving common security goals. It stressed the importance of knowledge exchange and collaborative efforts among nations to effectively combat crime and ensure public safety.

Additionally, the ‘Secure Usage and Adoption Of AI’ paper discussed the benefits of AI in policing while acknowledging the risks, threats, and challenges associated with its implementation. It emphasized the necessity of adopting a comprehensive approach that takes into account security, ethical, and societal risks.

One particularly interesting paper focused on ‘Real-Time Crowd and Transportation Management Using AI,’ showcasing digital innovations in crowd and transportation management. It highlighted the efforts made during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and shared insights from the MCIT’s TASMU program, which seeks to enhance transportation operations and citizen experience through technological advancements.

The conference’s final session featured two key papers, one addressing advanced strategies in crowd management during the Hajj season, while the other explored AI’s crucial role in fighting crimes and enforcing laws. These papers underscored the potential of artificial intelligence to revolutionize security practices and improve safety measures on both national and international scales.
