Cronos Labs, a Web3 startup accelerator, recently announced the alpha mainnet launch of Cronos zkEVM, a Layer-2 blockchain built on top of Ethereum (ETH) on the ZKsync Elastic Chain. This launch marks a significant milestone in scaling Ethereum and the broader ZK chain ecosystems, bringing advanced DeFi dApps to a wider audience. The development of Cronos zkEVM was a collaborative effort led by Cronos Labs, Matter Labs, Crypto.com, and various DeFi and gaming partners. After successful testing on the testnet with millions of transactions, Cronos zkEVM is now ready for real-world implementation.

Designed to address scalability issues within blockchain networks, especially Ethereum, Cronos zkEVM utilizes zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs to provide faster transaction speeds, lower fees, and improved security compared to traditional blockchains. The new chain joins the existing Cronos EVM and Cronos POS blockchains within the Cronos ecosystem, which collectively manage $6 billion in user assets. An important feature of Cronos zkEVM is the introduction of zkCRO as its native gas token, offering more flexibility for users and developers. Additionally, the chain incorporates account abstraction technology to simplify user interactions and support a wider range of transaction types.

Cronos zkEVM integrates seamlessly with the ZKsync Elastic Chain, a network of interconnected ZK rollups built on ZKsync technology. This integration aims to promote interoperability, allowing users to transfer assets and interact with various applications across different ZK chains within the Elastic Chain ecosystem. By joining forces with ZKsync, Cronos zkEVM is set to contribute to the long-term vision of Ethereum, towards infinite scalability and mainstream adoption. The chain also coexists with the existing Cronos infrastructure, which has already processed over 150 million transactions for a user base exceeding 1 million individuals.

The launch of Cronos zkEVM follows a successful testnet phase that began in December 2023. During this phase, the chain processed millions of transactions from over 3 million unique addresses, laying the groundwork for its transition to the mainnet environment. Cronos zkEVM will operate in an alpha phase until September 2024, allowing engineers to closely monitor network performance and gather user feedback to optimize the platform further. This period of testing and refinement will ensure that Cronos zkEVM can deliver on its promise of enhanced scalability, speed, and security for users within the Cronos ecosystem and beyond.
