Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), a member of Qatar Foundation, is dedicated to advancing research initiatives that align with Qatar’s national priorities in sustainability, health, and technology. Dr. Jennifer Bruder, associate dean for research at CMU-Q, emphasizes the University’s commitment to academic excellence and community engagement in Qatar and the region. With a focus on local and regional challenges, CMU-Q’s research agenda is inspired by the Qatar National Vision 2030 and National Development Strategies.

For the past 20 years, CMU-Q has been providing top-tier undergraduate degrees in fields such as biological sciences, business administration, computer science, and information systems. The University’s strong focus on research has resulted in a faculty of researchers who actively engage in projects that address regional issues. CMU-Q’s research office provides critical support to faculty, encouraging them to collaborate with external partners and focus their research on regionally relevant questions.

Student research is a key component of CMU-Q’s academic environment, with various opportunities for students to engage in meaningful inquiries. Programs such as the College Honors thesis and the university’s journal, Majal, introduce students to academic publishing and provide a platform for showcasing their research. The annual ‘Meeting of the Minds’ event allows students to present their research to faculty and industry experts, further highlighting CMU-Q’s commitment to student research.

Several impactful projects have emerged from CMU-Q’s research efforts, including the development of an English and Arabic curriculum for computer science education and cancer research projects contributing to a deeper understanding of the disease. The University is also exploring the unique features of the Qatari dialect and expanding its research into sustainability and artificial intelligence, with a focus on enhancing teaching and learning experiences. Faculty from various disciplines are exploring inclusive teaching practices and the use of artificial intelligence in the classroom.

As CMU-Q continues to foster a culture of curiosity and innovation, Dr. Bruder is excited about the current academic environment at the University. She believes it is an exciting time to study, teach, and learn at CMU-Q, as the University remains at the forefront of academic excellence and community engagement in Qatar and the region. With a strong emphasis on research that addresses regional issues and supports Qatar’s broader goals, CMU-Q is committed to making a meaningful impact on both local and global challenges.
