Online vendors in Bahrain are adapting to a new regulatory framework set forth by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, allowing holders of a virtual commercial licence to sell a variety of products online. While 71 different products are permitted, 12 specific items including food and beverages, medical devices, and heavy machinery are prohibited. To obtain a virtual commercial license, applicants must be Bahraini nationals operating as sole proprietors with a permanent address.

The restricted list of prohibited items also includes industrial chemicals, tobacco, petroleum and gas products, fertilizers, live animals, waste materials, and weapons, all of which typically require special approval for sale. For online chefs, the regulation outlines three key conditions that must be met, such as displaying the commercial registration number, upholding cleanliness standards during food preparation, and ensuring the safety of food, ingredients, and related processes.

In addition to expanding the range of products and services that can be offered online, the regulation opens up opportunities for online businesses in various sectors such as fashion design, photography, tourism, interior design, educational support, theatrical production, beauty services, and animal care. However, virtual commercial license holders are still prohibited from employing foreign labor under these regulations.

The directive issued by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce revokes three previous regulations related to commercial activities through virtual outlets and online sales. This updated regulation aims to provide Bahraini entrepreneurs with greater freedom to explore the digital marketplace while maintaining strict controls over specific sectors. Compliance with these guidelines is essential for online vendors in Bahrain as the landscape of online commerce in the country continues to evolve.

Overall, the changes in the regulatory framework for online vendors in Bahrain present both challenges and opportunities for entrepreneurs in the digital marketplace. With the expanded range of products and services that can be offered online, there is potential for growth and innovation in various sectors. However, strict controls over prohibited items and regulations regarding foreign labor must be adhered to in order to operate within the guidelines set forth by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. By navigating these regulations effectively, online vendors in Bahrain can take advantage of the evolving online marketplace and reach a broader audience with their products and services.
