National MS Society Funds Research to Improve Understanding of Multiple Sclerosis

The National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society has announced the funding of 15 research studies since the beginning of 2023. This initiative aims to enhance understanding of multiple sclerosis, as well as develop better diagnostic methods and treatment options. The society’s efforts are geared toward improving the quality of life for those living with the disease.

Contents
Investigating Genetic Links to MSSmart Sensors for Enhanced Disease Monitoring

The funded research projects cover a wide array of topics, including the genetic factors related to the disease among the local population, the development of smart sensors for monitoring motor changes, and the application of augmented reality in rehabilitation. These studies also explore the use of artificial intelligence for early diagnosis and predicting disease progression and treatment response.

Key Focus Areas of Funded Research

According to Yasmin Metwally, Director of Research and Advocacy at the National MS Society, a total of approximately 11 million UAE Dirhams has been allocated for these studies, which will continue through 2025. The research covers diverse areas, from genetic factors in the local population to wearable sensors that monitor movement and the application of augmented reality in rehabilitative practices.

Additionally, the society has published national treatment guidelines for multiple sclerosis, which have been adopted by the Abu Dhabi Department of Health. Efforts are underway to expand these guidelines to include other emirates, ensuring unified care standards and timely access to appropriate treatments for individuals with the condition.

Research Projects Demonstrating Innovative Technologies

Researchers involved in these studies emphasize the importance of developing scientific and practical solutions that improve the understanding of multiple sclerosis and enhance diagnostic and monitoring methods. Utilizing modern technologies, including artificial intelligence and wearable sensors, has opened new avenues for more precise and personalized care. This approach aims to enhance early intervention opportunities and improve health outcomes for patients.

Investigating Genetic Links to MS

Dr. Halima Al Naqbi, an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Khalifa University, leads a research study focusing on genetic associations in familial cases of multiple sclerosis. This study aims to enhance understanding of the genetic factors associated with the disease and their potential roles in disease susceptibility and progression.

Dr. Al Naqbi explains that by comparing patients with familial MS to their non-affected relatives, researchers can identify genetic variants linked to increased vulnerability to the disease and protective factors. This investigation may ultimately guide preventive measures tailored to individuals most at risk.

Smart Sensors for Enhanced Disease Monitoring

Dr. Charalambos Petsalidis, an Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at Khalifa University, is developing self-powered sensors to facilitate monitoring of multiple sclerosis patients. These wearable devices aim to track mobility performance and detect changes associated with disease progression.

According to Petsalidis, the sensors will be integrated into everyday wearables, such as wristbands and insoles. This innovative approach utilizes lightweight and flexible materials to produce electrical signals from mechanical motions, allowing for continuous data collection and analysis of patient movement patterns.

Augmented Reality for Cognitive and Motor Skills Training

Dr. Ilham Al-Sharman, an Associate Professor in Physical Therapy and Neurorehabilitation at the University of Sharjah, oversees a project that incorporates augmented reality into dual-task training for individuals with MS. This research aims to improve cognitive and motor abilities, such as balance and walking.

Dr. Al-Sharman highlights that many daily activities require both physical movement and cognitive engagement. By combining motor exercises with cognitive challenges, this training aims to enhance brain capacity for attention distribution, leading to better coordination of physical and cognitive tasks for patients.

Artificial Intelligence in MS Diagnosis and Treatment

Dr. Mohamed Yaqoob, an Assistant Professor in Computer Vision at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, is utilizing artificial intelligence to improve early diagnosis and timely treatment of multiple sclerosis. His study focuses on analyzing patient data, including MRI images and clinical histories, through advanced AI algorithms.

Moreover, Dr. Omar Khamishi from Mohammed bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences is developing AI-based predictive tools to evaluate treatment responses in MS patients. This research integrates genomic, clinical, and imaging data to identify the most effective treatment options for individuals living with the disease.

Future Directions in MS Research

The National MS Society remains committed to supporting transformative research that seeks sustainable solutions for individuals with multiple sclerosis. Through investment in scientific studies, collaborative efforts within the research community, and a focus on enhancing understanding and management of the disease, the society seeks to advance innovations that benefit patients and their families.

Moving forward, the society plans to fund a post-doctoral research fellowship for an Emirati national in collaboration with the MENACTRIMS fellowship program. This initiative aims to cultivate specialized expertise in multiple sclerosis research and care, ensuring that Emirati researchers can contribute to addressing regional and global challenges associated with the disease.
