Oman and Brunei Strengthen Strategic Partnership

His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman and Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam have agreed to elevate the relations between the two nations to a strategic partnership. This significant development aims to provide a framework for enhancing bilateral ties, building on existing areas of cooperation, and exploring new avenues of mutual interest. The agreement was reached during Sultan Haitham’s state visit to Brunei Darussalam from November 2 to 4, 2026.

This state visit marks the first of its kind for the Sultan of Oman to Brunei, representing a historic milestone in the longstanding friendly relations that have flourished since diplomatic ties were established in March 1984.

Highlights of the State Visit

The two leaders’ discussions focused on deepening the robust connections between their respective royal families and emphasized a mutual commitment to enhancing all aspects of bilateral relations. During this visit, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah awarded Sultan Haitham the highest royal honor of Brunei, while Sultan Haitham conferred the highest Omani decoration, the Al Said Order, upon Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Additionally, both monarchs inaugurated a photographic exhibition titled “Bridges Between the Two Sultanates” held at the Islamic Heritage Hall in Bandar Seri Begawan. This exhibition embodies the profound friendship between Oman and Brunei while commemorating this historic state visit.

Future Prospects for Cooperation

Throughout their meetings, Sultan Haitham and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah exchanged views on the remarkable advancements in their bilateral relationship, particularly in investment, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. They acknowledged the significance of maintaining close communication through existing bilateral mechanisms, such as regular consultation meetings. Both leaders encouraged enhancing dialogue and collaboration on bilateral and multilateral issues of mutual interest within the strategic partnership framework.

Building on this positive momentum, several bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed during the visit. The two leaders expressed their confidence that these agreements would provide both countries with opportunities to share perspectives, experiences, and best practices in relevant fields, thereby strengthening their cooperative efforts.

Commitment to Regional Stability and Diplomacy

In their talks, both leaders also discussed various regional and international issues. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah recognized Oman’s commitment under Sultan Haitham’s leadership to fostering peace, stability, and security through dialogue and diplomacy. The two monarchs reiterated their determination to support efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability through peaceful means in accordance with international law.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah expressed appreciation to Sultan Haitham for accepting the invitation to visit Brunei Darussalam. In return, Sultan Haitham conveyed gratitude for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him and his delegation during their stay. He reaffirmed Oman’s dedication to enhancing friendly relations and expanding avenues of cooperation with Brunei Darussalam, extending a gracious invitation to Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to visit Oman.

Conclusion: A New Era of Cooperation

The establishment of a strategic partnership between Oman and Brunei signifies a new era in their diplomatic relations, providing both nations with a solid framework to strengthen ties across various sectors. As both countries move forward, the focus will likely be on building on this foundation through future collaborations and exchanges. Observers will be keen to see how these developments unfold and what additional agreements may follow in the coming months, reflecting the growing bond between the two friendly nations.
