Seventeenth Statistical Commission Session Kicks Off in Oman

The Seventeenth session of the Statistical Commission under the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) commenced today in the Al Jabal Al Akhdar region of Oman. This three-day event is hosted by the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI), and includes participation from esteemed representatives of national statistical offices across Arab nations, as well as leaders from various international and regional organizations.

Notable opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCWA. She emphasized the crucial need for timely, reliable, and comparable data at a time when economic and social transformations are at an all-time high, particularly in light of the challenges posed by conflicts, occupation, disasters, and displacement.

Importance of Statistical Data Amid Global Challenges

Dr. Al-Mashat underscored that current global challenges offer renewed opportunities for enhancing the capabilities of statistical systems to meet increasing responsibilities. The current phase of implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is an opportunity to accelerate advancements toward these objectives. It is essential to identify gaps, understand their causes, and direct policies and resources toward the most vulnerable groups and areas.

Dr. Mostafa Saad Badawy, President of the Population and Housing Estimates Sector in Egypt, also shared insights regarding rapid transformations in statistical work. He stated that these changes extend beyond technology to encompass evolving demands for data and their diverse sources and applications. The importance of national ownership in advancing statistical systems was particularly emphasized during the sixteenth session of the Commission.

Oman’s Role in Advancing Regional Statistical Collaboration

Dr. Khalifa bin Abdullah Al-Brouani, CEO of NCSI, highlighted that Oman’s hosting of this session demonstrates a strong commitment to fostering statistical cooperation among Arab nations. His remarks focused on the need for comprehensive and flexible statistical systems that can respond effectively to rapid changes in the region.

Accurate and reliable data play a pivotal role in sound planning, enhancing institutional performance, and measuring the impact of policies and programs. The development of the national statistical and information system aligns closely with Oman’s Vision 2040, emphasizing data governance, quality enhancement, and the integration of modern technologies.

Key Discussions and Sessions Planned

The first day of the session featured the election of the Commission’s office members, the approval of the agenda, and discussions on statistical activities since the previous session, including technical cooperation initiatives by ESCWA. The agenda included several panel discussions aimed at improving statistical systems in the Arab region, addressing governance issues, and the utilization of modern technologies.

The session will further explore topics such as price statistics in the digital age, statistics during crises, and the innovative use of data analyses for policymaking. Additionally, the role of national accounts and the need for coordinated activities in building statistical capacities will be examined.

Future Steps and Conclusion

Looking ahead, the session is expected to provide insights into how statistical systems can better engage with current and future challenges, including the use of artificial intelligence in data collection and analysis. Oman will share its experience with the AI-driven Family Income and Expenditure Survey, showcasing its commitment to leveraging technology in advancing statistical practices.

The outcomes of this session will have a significant impact on the ability of countries within the region to respond to both national and regional needs effectively. As discussions continue over the next few days, stakeholders will be called upon to advance recommendations aimed at mutual collaboration and enhanced statistical practices across the Arab world.
