Spain’s Ambassador to Qatar, H E Javier Carbajosa, recently spoke at an event in Doha to mark the Spanish National Day. He emphasized Spain’s support for measures that aim to de-escalate conflicts in the Middle East and prevent a generalized war in the region. The ambassador highlighted the similar positions held by Spain and Qatar on various regional issues, particularly in Gaza and Lebanon. Spain, along with Qatar, has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the opening of cross points for humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages and prisoners.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Minister of Labour H E Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri, Minister of State and President of Qatar National Library H E Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari, and Director of the Protocol Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs H E Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro. The European Union Ambassador in Qatar H E Christian Tudor was also present. The Spanish Ambassador praised Qatar’s efforts at both national and regional levels, including its role as the rotating presidency of the GCC.

Spain has taken a firm stance on the situation in the Middle East, condemning the bombing of Lebanon and advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian State as a key to regional stability. In a significant move, Spain fully recognized the Palestinian State earlier this year and engaged in the first-ever bilateral summit with Palestine. Spain has also voiced support for the International Court of Justice’s recommendations regarding Israel’s responsibilities in the occupied Palestinian territories, and has halted arms exports to Israel to avoid contributing to the cycle of violence.

The bilateral relations between Qatar and Spain were described as excellent by the ambassador. Both countries were chosen to the UN Council of Human Rights for the period 2025-2027, indicating a shared commitment to defending and promoting human rights. High-level visits have taken place between the two nations, with the Spanish Foreign Minister visiting Doha in February and the Spanish Prime Minister officially visiting in April. In return, the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar visited Spain in May, further strengthening the ties between the two countries.

The event underscored the close collaboration and mutual understanding between Spain and Qatar on regional and international issues. Both countries aim to work together to address the complex challenges facing the Middle East and advocate for peace and stability in the region. The Spanish Ambassador’s remarks highlighted the importance of diplomatic efforts in resolving conflicts and promoting dialogue among nations. As allies on the world stage, Spain and Qatar continue to demonstrate their commitment to shared values and principles of peace, security, and cooperation.
