UK announces new requirements for electronic travel authorisation – News

The UK government has recently updated the criteria for obtaining an electronic travel authorization (ETA) in a memorandum released on Tuesday. Two new criteria have been added to the suitability grounds for attaining an ETA. Firstly, individuals who have previously been refused a visit visa or permission to enter the UK as a visitor will now be refused an ETA. However, this does not apply to those who were granted a visit visa subsequently after the refusal or had a valid permission that was not cancelled due to the refusal. Those whose ETA’s have been rejected will now have to apply for a visit visa instead. The second extended criterion allows for refusal if the applicant’s previous ETA had been cancelled for reasons not relating to suitability. These changes aim to prevent individuals from being refused entry at the UK border and having their ETA cancelled, forcing them to reapply for an ETA and seek re-entry to the UK.

The new changes ensure that applicants who are not eligible for an ETA are directed to apply for a visa instead, ensuring they meet the entry requirements beforehand. The electronic travel authorization is a permit for nationals from select countries to travel to the UK without needing a visa. Currently, citizens from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates can apply for an ETA. This permit allows them to travel to the UK for up to six months for tourism, visiting family or friends, business, short-term study purposes, and other activities. However, the UK government has also implemented a visa regime for Jordanians traveling to the country due to an increasing number of individuals traveling for purposes not permitted under the visit and ETA provisions, such as living, working, or claiming asylum in the UK. Jordanians are now required to apply for a visit visa when traveling to the UK.

Jordanians who are currently traveling to the UK without a visa but hold a valid ETA and have confirmed travel bookings before the imposition date will have a 28-day transition period before they need to obtain a visit visa. Those who do not meet these conditions during the transition period will be required to have a visa. Jordanian nationals with confirmed bookings for travel to the UK after the transition period ends must obtain a visa for entry. These changes come as a measure to control and regulate the entry of individuals into the UK, ensuring that the conditions for travel are met beforehand.

As the UAE citizens may be affected by these changes, it is essential to stay up to date with the latest news and follow updates from reputable sources. The UK government’s decision to update the criteria for obtaining an ETA aims to streamline the entry process and ensure that individuals meet the necessary requirements for travel to the country. By directing ineligible applicants to apply for a visa instead, the government aims to control the entry of individuals and prevent issues at the UK border. These measures will help in regulating the flow of travelers while maintaining the security and integrity of the entry process. For more information on the latest travel updates and requirements, individuals are encouraged to refer to official government sources and stay informed about any changes that may affect their travel plans.
