Marketa Vondrousova, the defending Wimbledon women’s champion, suffered a shocking first-round exit after being defeated by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro from Spain, marking the first time in 30 years that a defending women’s champion was eliminated in the first round. The Czech sixth seed was defeated 6-4 6-2 by her opponent, bringing her reign to an abrupt end. Additionally, two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray also faced disappointment as he had to withdraw from the singles competition due to injury, denying him a last hurrah on Centre Court. However, there is still a possibility for him to compete in the doubles later in the week.

Despite his injury setbacks, Murray’s old rival Novak Djokovic showed his strength by starting his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon impressively. Djokovic, who had knee surgery after withdrawing from the French Open, defeated Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva 6-1 6-2 6-2. He looked sharp and confident, expressing satisfaction with his opening match performance. Rain briefly interrupted play, but women’s top seed Iga Swiatek managed to secure a win against American Sofia Kenin under the Court One roof.

Last year’s unseeded women’s champion, Marketa Vondrousova, had a disappointing performance against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who secured her first Grand Slam victory with the win. Vondrousova was troubled by a hip injury but did not blame it for her defeat, admitting to feeling nervous throughout the match. On the men’s side, Andrey Rublev, the highest-seeded man in the tournament, was stunned by Francisco Comesana of Argentina, while French Open runner-up Alexander Zverev and Polish seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz secured wins.

Elena Rybakina, the women’s champion in 2022, started her Wimbledon campaign on a positive note by defeating qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse. American fifth seed Jessica Pegula also had a strong start, dropping only two games in dispatching Ashlyn Krueger. As the tournament progresses, fans can expect thrilling and competitive matches from the remaining players vying for glory at Wimbledon. Whether it be Djokovic’s quest for another Grand Slam title, Murray’s potential doubles success, or the rising stars making their mark, the competition promises to be intense and exciting.
