The World Health Organization’s director-general, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has spoken out against the targeting of Palestinian medical facilities by Israeli forces during the conflict with Hamas. He called for an end to attacks on hospitals and the immediate release of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, who was detained by Israeli forces accused of being a Hamas operative. The recent raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza is part of a disturbing pattern of targeting medical facilities and personnel, according to humanitarian organizations. Dr Tedros emphasized the critical need for access to healthcare for the people of Gaza and the importance of allowing aid workers to provide assistance without interference.

The situation in Gaza’s healthcare sector is dire, with several hospitals being attacked and patients detained as they seek treatment. The Al-Ahli Hospital and Al-Wafa Rehabilitation Hospital were targeted, and patients at the Indonesian Hospital are unable to receive care due to damage from the attacks. The ongoing violence in Gaza has led to a significant number of casualties, with thousands killed or injured and millions displaced. Aid workers are raising concerns about the lack of basic necessities such as blankets and warm clothing, especially as temperatures drop. Tragically, a 20-day-old baby died from hypothermia in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in the region.

Dr Tedros reiterated the need for a ceasefire to end the violence and allow for the delivery of much-needed medical aid to those affected by the conflict. He emphasized that hospitals should be safe havens for the sick and injured, not targets of violence. The international community must work together to ensure the protection of healthcare facilities and personnel in conflict zones, and to provide access to essential medical care for all those in need. By prioritizing the well-being of civilians, particularly women and children who are disproportionately affected by the violence, a lasting peace can be achieved in the region.

The targeting of medical facilities in conflict areas is a violation of humanitarian law, and perpetrators must be held accountable for these actions. The deliberate attacks on hospitals and healthcare workers put the lives of vulnerable populations at risk and hinder the ability of aid organizations to provide assistance. The international community must condemn such acts of violence and work towards a resolution that ensures the protection of healthcare facilities and the safety of medical personnel. Dr Tedros’ call for a ceasefire and an end to attacks on hospitals is a crucial step towards achieving peace and stability in the region, and must be supported by all parties involved in the conflict.

As the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, it is imperative that all parties prioritize the protection of civilian lives and uphold the principles of international humanitarian law. The systematic dismantling of the health system in Gaza is a grave concern that must be addressed immediately to prevent further harm to the civilian population. By working towards a ceasefire and allowing for the safe delivery of medical aid, the international community can help alleviate the suffering of the people in Gaza and pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Dr Tedros’ advocacy for the protection of medical facilities and personnel in Gaza is a critical call to action that must be heeded by all those with the power to influence the situation on the ground.

In conclusion, the ongoing attacks on hospitals and medical facilities in Gaza are endangering the lives of civilians and hindering the delivery of essential healthcare services to those in need. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’ plea for an end to attacks on hospitals and the release of detained medical personnel is a crucial step towards ensuring the protection of healthcare facilities and personnel in conflict zones. The international community must come together to condemn these actions and work towards a lasting ceasefire that prioritizes the well-being of civilians. By upholding the principles of international humanitarian law and ensuring access to medical care for all, we can help alleviate the suffering of the people in Gaza and move towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
