The cost of flour has increased, leading to price hikes in popular restaurants and cafeterias in Bahrain. Some establishments have raised the prices of popular flatbreads like “jibati” due to the rising cost of flour. MP Hamad Al Doy has called for discussions between the legislative and executive branches to address the issue, suggesting increased government support for Bahrain Flour Mills if necessary.

Al Doy urges the company to postpone the price increase until a consensus is reached, as the current decision is causing market disruption. He emphasizes that the rising prices will particularly impact low-income families and could lead to a chain reaction affecting various goods in the local market. Al Doy also calls for intensified inspection efforts by authorities to ensure that businesses are not taking advantage of the situation to increase prices unjustly.

Following a meeting between the government, Shura Council members, and MPs, a decision has been made to defer the price increase for three months. This compromise was proposed by the Council of Representatives Speaker to allow for further study and discussion. Despite opposition from some representatives who wanted the increase completely canceled, the company has yet to revert the price hike, causing concern among livestock farmers, restaurants, and bakeries.

The price increase, ranging from 35% to 100% on most flour products, has raised alarms in the market. However, the company has maintained subsidized prices for accredited bakeries to mitigate the impact on certain businesses. The ongoing situation calls for a careful balance between addressing the rising cost of flour and ensuring that essential products remain affordable for all segments of the population.

In conclusion, the issue of flour price increases in Bahrain has sparked a debate between lawmakers and businesses, with concerns raised about the impact on consumers and the market as a whole. The government, legislative bodies, and relevant authorities are working to find a solution that balances the interests of all stakeholders. As discussions continue, it is important for businesses to act responsibly and for authorities to monitor the situation closely to prevent unfair practices that could further burden consumers. Ultimately, a coordinated effort is needed to navigate this challenge and ensure a fair and sustainable outcome for all involved.
