In a world where people are living longer, more individuals are choosing to continue working past the traditional retirement age. Professor Andrew Scott, a longevity and aging researcher, highlighted the fact that many older adults are eager to continue contributing to society and utilizing their expertise. He emphasized the need for society to change its views towards older individuals, recognizing them as valuable assets rather than burdens on the healthcare system.

The introduction of retirement visas in the UAE has provided expats with the opportunity to stay in the country after retiring. Additionally, the Golden Visa scheme has attracted more individuals aged 60 and above to move to the UAE, presenting a unique opportunity for the country to benefit from their skills and knowledge. This shift towards embracing an older workforce aligns with Professor Scott’s research, which emphasizes the importance of realigning society to accommodate a growing older population.

One example of an individual who has chosen to continue working past retirement age is Dutch national Heidi Struiksma. After working as a human resources expert for several decades in the UAE, she transitioned to freelancing in 2007 to have more flexibility in her work schedule and pursue her passions. Despite the challenges that come with freelancing as a septuagenarian, such as fluctuating client numbers and expensive medical insurance, Heidi remains committed to staying in the UAE and contributing to the community.

Heidi’s freelance work allows her to focus on coaching, mentoring, and training young Emirati talents, as well as working with companies that align with her values. She also actively participates in hobbies such as trekking and volunteering with organizations like Sailablity, showcasing the importance of maintaining a fulfilling lifestyle beyond traditional retirement age. By prioritizing her passions and values, Heidi exemplifies the concept of ‘unretiring’ and continuing to make meaningful contributions to society.

Despite the challenges that come with freelancing as an older adult, Heidi finds fulfillment in her work and remains dedicated to staying in the UAE. With a diverse community and a wealth of cultural experiences, she values the opportunities for learning and growth that the country offers. While financial pressures and uncertainties about the future exist, Heidi’s commitment to her work and the community demonstrates the potential for older adults to thrive and make a positive impact in society. In conclusion, it is clear that the concept of ‘unretiring’ presents unique opportunities for individuals to continue working, mentoring, and contributing to society well beyond traditional retirement age.
