Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, who recently passed away, was a prominent figure in the United Arab Emirates. He held various important positions such as Vice Chairman of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Vice Chairman of the Supreme Petroleum Council. Recognized for his contributions, the road between Al Ain and Dubai was renamed in his honor in November 2018. Sheikh Tahnoun was the brother-in-law of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan through his marriage to Sheikha Hessa, Sheikh Zayed’s sister.

Sheikh Tahnoun was a close companion of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and gained valuable experience and knowledge from him. Serving as the Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain, he was deeply involved in the affairs of the region and its people. Sheikh Tahnoun’s journey began in 1966 when Sheikh Zayed appointed him as Chairman of the Department of Agriculture and Chairman of Al Ain Municipality, shortly after assuming power in Abu Dhabi.

Playing a pivotal role in the establishment of the UAE, Sheikh Tahnoun worked closely with Sheikh Zayed on the efforts leading to the declaration of the Union on December 2, 1971. He served as Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture prior to the Union and held various positions within the Abu Dhabi government. Sheikh Tahnoun’s affiliation with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, Adnoc, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority exemplifies his dedication to the country’s progress.

Known for his direct communication and close ties with the people of Al Ain, Sheikh Tahnoun was focused on serving the citizens of the city. His official positions and exceptional service record highlight his commitment to addressing the concerns of the people and participating in their joys and sorrows. Sheikh Tahnoun’s legacy continues to inspire and his contributions to the UAE’s development are remembered fondly by all who knew him.
