Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting families through ‘smishing’ attacks, with 28 per cent of attacks coming through SMS messages. In a smishing attack, cybercriminals send text messages that appear to be from legitimate sources, such as banks or government agencies, requesting personal information or asking recipients to click on a link. To protect against these scams, individuals should verify the sender, avoid clicking on links, install security applications on devices, be cautious with personal information, and utilize mobile cybersecurity solutions.

In the UAE, public sector entities face an average of 50,000 cybersecurity attacks daily, with over 71 million attempted attacks successfully blocked in the first three quarters of 2023. The country has implemented regulations to combat cybercrime, identity theft, and financial fraud, but it is essential for the public to remain vigilant and recognize red flags to prevent falling victim to malicious activities. Residents have reported receiving text messages from fraudulent shipping companies requesting personal information, and fraudsters have also utilized vishing tactics to impersonate authorities and extract sensitive information from individuals.

Recently, Abu Dhabi Police warned residents about fraudulent calls and links to counterfeit websites circulating on social media, exploiting events and occasions to deceive the public with fake services and offers. With the rise of cyber attacks and scams, it is crucial for individuals to educate themselves about the different tactics used by cybercriminals and take proactive measures to protect their personal information and privacy. By staying informed and cautious, individuals can reduce their risk of falling victim to smishing, vishing, and other fraudulent activities targeting families in the UAE.

As technology continues to advance, cybercriminals are finding more sophisticated ways to deceive individuals and extract sensitive information. It is important for families to stay updated on the latest cybersecurity threats and trends to prevent falling victim to scams. By following best practices, such as verifying senders, avoiding clicking on suspicious links, and utilizing security applications on devices, families can minimize their risk of being targeted by cybercriminals. Additionally, being cautious with personal information and leveraging mobile cybersecurity solutions can further enhance protection against smishing and other types of cyber attacks.

In conclusion, cybersecurity threats are on the rise, particularly targeting families through smishing attacks in the UAE. By taking proactive measures, staying informed about the latest scams, and being cautious with personal information, individuals can reduce their risk of falling victim to cybercriminals. It is important for families to educate themselves about cybersecurity best practices and utilize available tools and resources to protect their personal information and privacy. By working together to combat cyber threats, families can safeguard themselves against malicious activities and maintain a secure online environment.
