In an era where digital payments are prevalent, the necessity of carrying cash for emergencies cannot be emphasized enough. A global cyber outage affected various sectors, leading to residents facing difficulties while shopping, paying bills, or refilling their tanks. Awais Toor, an engineer working in Sharjah, experienced this firsthand when his debit card payment was declined multiple times at a store. Despite checking his bank account and finding no issues, he had to withdraw cash from an ATM to pay for his purchases. This incident made Toor realize the importance of having cash on hand for unexpected situations.

Similarly, Nida Huq, a Pakistani resident in Abu Hail, encountered a similar issue at a petrol station when she realized the pump only accepted cash payments. After checking her wallet and finding insufficient funds, she had to leave the pump while her tank was only partially filled. Huq returned later with the remaining amount to settle the bill. This experience prompted her to recognize the significance of not solely relying on digital methods for transactions and the value of keeping cash for such emergencies.

Mohammed AbuHamid, a marketing executive at a corporate gifting firm, faced a challenging situation at a restaurant in Al Nahda. During lunch with his colleagues, they discovered that the POS machines were not functioning, leaving them with only Dh50 for a total bill of Dh140 for eight people. In the end, they had to leave the restaurant without paying the bill and returned later to settle it. This embarrassing and inconvenient situation highlighted the importance of having cash available for unforeseen circumstances, even in a predominantly digital payment environment.

The incidents involving Toor, Huq, and AbuHamid illustrate the need for individuals to balance their reliance on digital transactions with the importance of carrying cash for emergencies. In today’s world, where cashless transactions are the norm, it is easy to overlook the value of traditional payment methods. However, unforeseen technical glitches or system failures can disrupt digital payment systems, leaving individuals stranded without the means to make necessary payments. These experiences serve as a reminder that having cash on hand is essential to ensure smooth transactions in case of emergencies.

As reiterated by Toor, Huq, and AbuHamid, carrying cash for emergencies is a prudent decision in a digital age where technical glitches can disrupt digital payment systems. While cashless transactions offer convenience and efficiency, having physical currency available can serve as a backup plan during unforeseen circumstances. These incidents highlight the importance of maintaining a balance between digital and traditional payment methods to ensure financial preparedness and smooth transactions in all situations. As technology continues to advance, it is crucial for individuals to recognize the significance of having cash on hand for unforeseen emergencies.
