In Dubai, many residents lack essential first aid skills, leading to fatal consequences in emergencies. A survey conducted in 2019 revealed that only a small percentage of individuals in the UAE were trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic first aid treatments. The case of M.J., who lost his father to a heart attack, highlights the critical importance of timely intervention through first aid. Experts emphasize that administering first aid within minutes of an incident can significantly increase the chances of survival, demonstrating the need for more residents to acquire these lifesaving skills.

Nurse Priscilla Bency’s heroic act on a public transport bus saved the life of an elderly man who suffered a heart attack. Her quick response in performing CPR until emergency services arrived showcases the difference between life and death in critical situations. Stories like Priscilla’s underscore the significance of ordinary individuals possessing basic first aid skills to aid in emergencies and potentially save lives. Experts argue that equipping the public with these skills can lead to safer communities and enhance overall public safety.

Dr. Zeynep Zehra Gumus, an internal medicine specialist, emphasizes the importance of bystanders stepping in to stabilize victims before professional help arrives, significantly boosting survival rates and reducing the severity of injuries. She advocates for widespread education in lifesaving skills as a means of enhancing collective preparedness and resilience within communities. Dilip, a first aid trainer, highlights the ease and quickness of learning first aid principles, such as treating injuries, administering CPR, and using a defibrillator, which can be crucial in a country like the UAE with a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease and smoking.

In conclusion, the necessity for individuals to possess basic first aid skills cannot be overstated, especially in a society where every second counts in saving lives during emergencies. The incidents narrated by M.J., Priscilla, and other healthcare professionals emphasize the critical role that timely first aid intervention plays in potentially preventing fatalities and mitigating the severity of injuries. By promoting widespread education in lifesaving techniques, communities can become safer and more resilient in challenging situations, ultimately enhancing public safety and strengthening the overall emergency response system. It is imperative that more UAE residents prioritize acquiring these essential skills to be better prepared to handle emergencies and offer immediate assistance when needed.
