The UAE President has recently pardoned Bangladeshi nationals involved in protests and disturbances in several emirates. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed has also ordered the authorities to drop the sentences of those convicted and arrange for their deportation from the country. This decision brings relief to many Bangladeshi expatriates living in the UAE, especially those who were convicted. BM Jamal Hossain, the Consul General of Bangladesh in Dubai and Northern Emirates, has expressed gratitude to the UAE President and officials for this initiative.

Following the President’s directives, Dr Hamad Al Shamsi, UAE Attorney-General, has issued an order to halt the implementation of the sentences and commence deportation procedures for the convicted Bangladeshi nationals. The Attorney General emphasized the importance of respecting the UAE’s laws and the protection of the right to express opinions within the legal framework of the country. He urged residents to use lawful means for expressing their views, ensuring that such actions do not harm the interests of the nation and its people.

In July, three Bangladeshi individuals were sentenced to life imprisonment, and 54 others were ordered to be deported after serving prison terms for their involvement in riots and protests in the Emirates. The expedited trial resulted from protests against the then-prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and her government. The three individuals received life sentences for inciting riots, while others were sentenced to varying prison terms for participating in illegal gatherings and entering the country without permission.

After the arrest and conviction of the 57 individuals, Bangladeshi missions in the UAE urged their compatriots to abide by local laws and refrain from engaging in prohibited activities that could lead to visa cancellation, jail time, fines, or a ban on entering the UAE. The UAE government’s decision to pardon and deport the convicted Bangladeshi nationals reflects a commitment to upholding the rule of law while also recognizing the importance of respecting and protecting the rights of expatriates living in the country.

Overall, the UAE President’s pardon for Bangladeshi nationals involved in protests and disturbances demonstrates a balance between maintaining law and order and showing compassion towards individuals who may have acted out of dissent. The decision to drop sentences and arrange for deportation reflects the country’s commitment to upholding justice while also ensuring the welfare of expatriate communities. Moving forward, it is crucial for all residents of the UAE to continue respecting the laws of the country and utilizing lawful means to express their opinions without jeopardizing the peace and stability of the nation.
