Archer Aviation, a US-based company, is set to launch air taxi operations in the UAE next year with the recruitment and training of pilots to operate electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. They have partnered with Etihad Aviation Training (EAT) to train prospective pilots for flying the Midnight aircraft. EAT offers training courses for airport, pilot, and cabin crew staff and has listed Etihad Airways, Wizz Air, AirArabia, flydubai, Oman Air, and others as its industry partners and customers.

In April, Archer Aviation received multi-hundred-million dollar investments from Abu Dhabi to manufacture Midnight in the UAE and establish its international headquarters in the Emirates. The investments also aimed at constructing vertiports in critical locations across Abu Dhabi and accelerating the launch of commercial air taxi operations in the UAE next year. The Midnight aircraft will reduce travel time from 60-90 minute car commutes to an estimated 10-20 minute air taxi flight, providing rapid back-to-back flights with minimal charge time between flights.

EAT will provide local guidance and expertise in line with the guidelines of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and other local authorities to establish appropriate pilot training requirements in the UAE. Nikhil Goel, chief commercial officer at Archer Aviation, highlighted the importance of training a fleet of pilots to operate the aircraft for establishing a thriving urban air mobility network in Abu Dhabi and the rest of the UAE. Captain Paolo La Cava, CEO of Etihad Training, expressed excitement in choosing Archer as their first eVTOL partner to recruit and train the first class of electric air taxi pilots in Abu Dhabi.

The partnership between Archer Aviation and EAT marks a significant step towards introducing air taxis in the UAE, reducing travel time significantly and enabling quick back-to-back flights. The investments from Abu Dhabi have paved the way for manufacturing Midnight in the UAE, establishing international headquarters in the Emirates, and constructing vertiports for commercial air taxi operations. The pilot training program by EAT will ensure that qualified pilots are ready to operate Archer’s Midnight aircraft for commercial operations within the region.

The collaboration between Archer Aviation and Etihad Aviation Training is expected to have a positive impact on the urban air mobility network in Abu Dhabi and the UAE, providing efficient and fast transportation options for commuters. The introduction of electric air taxis such as Midnight will revolutionize the way people travel, with reduced commute times and increased convenience. The focus on pilot training and operational readiness underscores the commitment of both companies towards establishing a successful air taxi service in the region.

As preparations continue for the launch of commercial air taxi operations in the UAE, the recruitment and training of pilots by Archer Aviation and EAT play a crucial role in ensuring the success of the venture. The partnership between the two companies signifies a shared vision for integrating eVTOL aircraft into the local transportation network and providing innovative solutions for urban mobility challenges. With the introduction of electric air taxis, residents and visitors in the UAE can look forward to a faster and more efficient way of traveling within and between cities.
