North Al Sharqiyah Governorate in Muscat experienced a tourism boom from October to March, 2024, with hotel room occupancy rates reaching between 60% and 90% during the peak season. The region boasts 47 tourist facilities offering a total of 1,044 hotel rooms. Mohammed bin Saif Al Riyami, Head of the Tourism Development Department, highlighted the governorate’s preparations for the upcoming winter tourist season, aiming to attract both domestic and international visitors.

The governorate features diverse accommodations such as hotels, tourist camps, guest houses, green inns, rest houses, and hotel apartment buildings. Al Riyami emphasized the region’s unique attractions including the Al Sharqiyah sands and valleys, oases, sulphur springs, water ponds, and waterfalls. Additionally, historic sites like ancient mountain trails, castles, forts, and traditional markets provide rich experiences for tourists. Villages like “Al-Manzafah” and “Al-Qanater” offer a nostalgic journey through classic car tours. The governorate is home to 25 registered archaeological sites, each reflecting the region’s profound cultural heritage and historical significance.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is actively working to transform these archaeological sites into major tourist attractions, enhancing the cultural and economic fabric of the region. Key archaeological sites highlighted by Khamis bin Salem Al Maskari, Assistant Director of the Department of Heritage and Tourism, include Al Khashaba, Gharyan, Al Salili in Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi, and Shannah in Wilayat of Al Qabil. Efforts are being made to preserve these archaeological treasures by documenting sites, implementing protective regulations, cataloging and preserving finds, and involving the community through educational meetings and exhibitions.

As North Al Sharqiyah Governorate continues to improve its tourism offerings, it is poised to become a top destination for adventure seekers and history enthusiasts alike. The region’s blend of natural beauty and cultural depth promises an enriching experience for every visitor. With a focus on showcasing the area’s unique attractions and preserving its rich heritage, the governorate is set to attract a growing number of tourists, both from within Oman and beyond.
