Shigeru Ishiba, Japan’s next Prime Minister and the newly elected head of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, has outlined pro-blockchain and NFT policies. Ishiba, who will be appointed as Prime Minister next week after winning the LDP leadership election, believes that blockchain technology and NFTs can help boost regional economies. He plans to maximize the value of analog local products such as food and tourism experiences by utilizing blockchain technology and NFTs. This aligns with calls from crypto industry groups to use NFTs and DAOs to enhance rural economies. Additionally, Ishiba will appoint the LDP’s current web3 taskforce chief, Masaaki Taira, as the government’s new Minister of Digital Affairs.

Masaaki Taira has expressed plans to use NFTs to increase the international popularity of Japanese intellectual property assets. He also believes that Japan needs to reform its tax system to better support crypto startups, as the current system is not optimized for startups in the modern era. Taira highlighted the challenges faced by accounting firms when auditing tokens issued by startup companies that are not as well-known as Bitcoin. The government’s focus on supporting the growth of crypto startups aligns with the global trend of fostering innovation in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space.

In preparation for the upcoming general election on October 27, Ishiba has announced his intention to promote regions with zero digital divides and develop internet resources and digitalization. He aims to correct the over-concentration of businesses in Tokyo and maximize the potential of regional areas by incentivizing startups. The policy document released by Ishiba’s offices emphasizes the importance of bridging the digital gap and leveraging technology to drive economic growth across different regions in Japan. By focusing on decentralization and innovation, Ishiba aims to create a more dynamic and inclusive economy that benefits both rural and urban areas.

The LDP’s long-standing dominance in Japanese politics, with the exception of brief periods of ousting in the past, suggests that the party is likely to retain its overall majority in the upcoming election. However, the growing focus on digitalization, blockchain technology, and NFTs under Ishiba’s leadership signals a shift towards embracing emerging technologies to drive economic progress. By appointing key figures like Masaaki Taira to lead digital initiatives, Ishiba aims to position Japan as a leader in the blockchain and crypto space. The government’s emphasis on supporting startups and fostering innovation reflects a recognition of the importance of technological advancement in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.

As Ishiba prepares to take on the role of Prime Minister, his commitment to leveraging blockchain technology and NFTs to boost regional economies and drive digital transformation signals a progressive approach to governance. By aligning government policies with the needs of the growing crypto industry and emphasizing the importance of supporting startups, Ishiba aims to position Japan as a hub for blockchain innovation. With the upcoming general election set to shape the future direction of the country, Ishiba’s focus on digitalization and decentralization represents a step towards creating a more inclusive and tech-savvy economy that benefits all regions of Japan.
