Olive oil has been shown to have numerous health benefits, including reducing the risk of dementia-related death. A recent study published in JAMA Network Open found that consuming at least half a tablespoon of olive oil daily was associated with a 28% lower risk of dementia-related mortality. The researchers used data from two large cohort studies in the United States and followed over 90,000 participants for 28 years. Those who consumed more than 7 grams of olive oil per day had significantly lower rates of dementia-related death compared to those who consumed less olive oil.

The study also found that substituting margarine and mayonnaise with olive oil was associated with an 8% to 14% lower risk of dementia-related death. Other vegetable oils or butter did not provide the same benefits. The researchers concluded that, regardless of diet quality, higher olive oil intake was linked to a lower risk of dementia-related mortality in US adults. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin E and polyphenols, which protect cells and blood vessels in the brain. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which could help prevent cognitive decline.

Experts recommend incorporating olive oil into your daily diet by using it for cooking, making salad dressings, or drizzling it over protein sources before cooking. While butter also has health benefits, olive oil is preferred for most cooking applications due to its unique benefits for brain health and overall well-being. Supplements are not recommended, as it is better to get the benefits of olive oil from food sources. In addition to reducing the risk of dementia-related mortality, olive oil has also been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, and all-cause mortality.

Overall, olive oil offers a wide range of health benefits and can be beneficial for everyone when consumed daily. It is important to prioritize unsaturated fats like olive oil in your diet while also incorporating butter and saturated oils in moderation. Choosing olive oil as your primary cooking oil and using it in various recipes can help improve your overall health and well-being. Incorporating a healthy diet along with olive oil consumption can provide even greater benefits for brain health and cognitive function.
