The Indian Air Force (IAF) mourns the loss of Wing Commander G.N. Reddy, a seasoned fighter pilot who died in a MiG-21 trainer aircraft crash near Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district on October 20, 2025. The incident, which occurred during a routine training sortie, has prompted a formal investigation by the IAF to determine the cause of the aircraft accident. Reddy is survived by his wife, Wing Commander Afshan Reddy, also an IAF officer, their daughter, and his parents.

The crash took place around 1630 hours local time. Authorities confirmed that Reddy was flying a twin-seat MiG-21, commonly used for training new pilots. The location of the crash, a sparsely populated area near Jaisalmer, limited potential for civilian impact, according to initial reports. The IAF has initiated standard procedures following the incident, including a court of inquiry.

Investigation Launched Following MiG-21 Aircraft Accident

The IAF has established a court of inquiry, headed by a senior officer, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the aircraft accident. The investigation will focus on all potential factors, including mechanical failure, human error, and weather conditions. A preliminary report is expected within the next few weeks, though a comprehensive analysis could take considerably longer.

Aging MiG-21 Fleet

The MiG-21, a Soviet-era aircraft, has been a mainstay of the IAF for decades. However, the fleet is aging, and has been subject to numerous upgrades and life extension programs. Despite these efforts, the aircraft has a relatively high accident rate compared to more modern platforms. According to data released by the Ministry of Defence in 2024, the MiG-21 has been involved in over 400 accidents since 1963, resulting in the loss of over 200 pilots.

The IAF is actively phasing out the MiG-21 and replacing it with more advanced fighters like the Rafale, Sukhoi Su-30MKI, and indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft. However, the process is gradual, and the MiG-21 will continue to play a role in training and operational duties for the foreseeable future. This transition is a key component of the IAF’s modernization efforts.

Wing Commander Reddy’s death underscores the inherent risks associated with military aviation. He was a highly respected officer within the IAF, known for his professionalism and dedication to duty. His loss is deeply felt by his colleagues and the wider defense community.

Tributes and Military Honours

Full military honours were bestowed upon Wing Commander Reddy during his last rites. The ceremony included a ceremonial gun salute, wreath-laying by senior officers, and a solemn procession. A particularly poignant moment occurred when his wife, Wing Commander Afshan Reddy, herself an IAF officer, saluted her husband’s coffin, demonstrating the strong bond and shared commitment to service within the family.

Numerous tributes have poured in from across the country, praising Reddy’s courage and service. The Defence Minister expressed condolences to the family and lauded Reddy’s contribution to national security. Social media platforms have also been filled with messages of grief and respect for the fallen air warrior. The incident has sparked renewed discussion regarding pilot safety and the need for continued investment in modernizing the IAF’s aviation safety infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the focus remains on supporting Wing Commander Reddy’s family during this difficult time. The IAF has pledged to provide all necessary assistance and support to his wife, daughter, and parents.

The investigation into the crash is expected to provide valuable insights into the factors that contributed to the incident. The findings will likely inform future training protocols and maintenance procedures, with the aim of preventing similar tragedies. The IAF is committed to learning from this event and enhancing the safety of its operations.

Looking ahead, the completion of the court of inquiry and the implementation of any resulting recommendations are the immediate priorities. The timeline for the full report remains uncertain, but the IAF is expected to share key findings with the public once the investigation is complete. The ongoing modernization of the IAF fleet and improvements to flight safety measures will continue to be closely monitored.
