World, the biometric identity verification project co-founded by Sam Altman, launched a major update to its app today, introducing encrypted chat and expanded cryptocurrency payment features. The new “super app” aims to bolster user engagement and drive adoption of its core technology: a system for verifying unique human identities in an increasingly digital world. The update comes as the company seeks to scale its user base beyond its current 20 million verified individuals.

New Features Drive User EngagementAddressing the Scalability Challenge

The release, previewed at a San Francisco event, marks a significant step in World’s evolution from a simple digital wallet to a more comprehensive platform. According to the company, the goal is to create a new economic model built on web3 principles, addressing the growing need to distinguish between real people and AI-generated bots online.

Expanding the World App Ecosystem with Digital Identity

World’s central offering is its World ID, a privacy-preserving digital identity created through iris scanning. Users visit designated locations or utilize the recently released Orb Mini devices to have their irises scanned, generating a unique, encrypted code. This code then serves as proof of personhood within the World ecosystem. However, the new features don’t require verification to use.

New Features Drive User Engagement

The most prominent addition is World Chat, an end-to-end encrypted messaging service comparable to Signal in terms of security. A key differentiator is the color-coding of chat bubbles, visually indicating whether a contact has been verified by World’s system. This feature is designed to incentivize verification and provide users with greater confidence in their online interactions. The company says the addition of chat was driven by user demand for a more social experience within the app.

Additionally, the app now offers more robust cryptocurrency payment capabilities. Users can receive paychecks and make bank deposits directly into the World App, which can then be converted into crypto. This expanded functionality positions World as a more versatile financial tool, potentially attracting a wider audience beyond those specifically interested in digital identity.

Addressing the Scalability Challenge

Scaling verification remains a key challenge for Tools for Humanity, the startup behind World. Sam Altman has publicly stated a goal of scanning a billion people’s irises, but current verification numbers fall far short of that ambition. The introduction of the Orb Mini, a handheld scanning device, represents an effort to lower the barrier to entry and accelerate the verification process.

Meanwhile, the company is exploring further innovations in verification technology. Alex Blania, World’s CEO, has indicated plans to potentially transform the Orb Mini into a mobile point-of-sale device or license its ID sensor technology to device manufacturers. Such moves could significantly broaden access to World ID verification.

The Future of Proof of Personhood and Web3 Integration

The addition of social and financial features suggests World is aiming to become a more integral part of users’ daily lives, increasing the value proposition of its digital identity system. The company believes that a reliable “proof of human” mechanism is crucial in a world increasingly susceptible to AI-generated misinformation and fraud. The project’s success hinges on widespread adoption, which requires addressing privacy concerns and making the verification process as convenient as possible.

Looking ahead, the company is expected to focus on expanding the availability of Orb Minis and exploring partnerships to integrate World ID into other platforms and services. The long-term viability of the project, and the broader concept of decentralized identity, remains uncertain, but the latest update demonstrates a clear commitment to building a comprehensive and user-friendly ecosystem. The next year will be critical in determining whether World can achieve its ambitious goals and establish itself as a leading player in the emerging field of biometric authentication and web3 technology.

The company has not yet announced a firm timeline for wider Orb Mini distribution or potential partnerships, but these developments are expected to be key areas of focus in the coming months.
