Dilip Vengsarkar, the Indian cricket legend, reflects on his career and the evolution of cricket in a recent interview. Despite being retired for over 32 years, Vengsarkar remains fit and active, dividing his time between coaching and spending time with his family in Dubai. He fondly remembers his first visit to Dubai, where he was amazed by the city’s transformation from a small road in the desert to a modern metropolis.

Vengsarkar reminisces about the early days of cricket in Sharjah, where he played in exhibition matches that kickstarted the cricket revolution in the region. He praises Abdul Rahman Bukhatir for his role in developing the Sharjah Cricket Stadium and hosting annual tournaments that featured top international teams. The rivalry between India and Pakistan in Sharjah created unforgettable moments in cricket history, including the famous last-ball six by Javed Miandad.

The former Indian captain also highlights the efforts of Sharjah’s cricket organisers in promoting the tournaments globally and attracting celebrities from Bollywood to add glamour to the matches. Vengsarkar recalls the excitement and intensity of the India-Pakistan matches in Sharjah, which captured the attention of fans from both countries. He credits Bukhatir, Asif Iqbal, and Qasim Noorani for the success of the tournaments in Sharjah.

Reflecting on the changes in cricket, Vengsarkar acknowledges the impact of T20 cricket and the influx of money in the game, particularly with the IPL. He recalls a time when there was no monetary reward for players, such as when each player received only Rs25,000 for winning the 1983 World Cup. Lata Mangeshkar’s support in raising funds for the team through a concert in Delhi left a lasting impression on Vengsarkar, showcasing her love for cricket and generosity.

Vengsarkar shares a special memory of meeting Lata Mangeshkar in London, where she cooked a delicious meal for the Indian team after their victory at Lord’s Cricket Ground. He recalls her humble nature, love for the game, and regular presence at cricket matches in India. Vengsarkar cherishes the opportunity to connect with the iconic singer and appreciate the person behind the legendary voice. Overall, Vengsarkar’s reflections offer a unique perspective on the evolution of cricket and the impact of key moments and individuals in his career.
