South Korea and Oman are celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2024 with a series of events organised by the South Korean Embassy in Muscat. These celebrations reflect the strong relationship between the two countries across political, economic, and cultural spheres since they established diplomatic ties in 1974. The year-long festivities began in May with the unveiling of a commemorative logo and a reception honouring Oman’s youth taekwondo team. Ambassador Kiejoo Kim highlighted the robust bilateral relationship, especially in the context of global efforts to achieve Net Zero emissions.

A key focus of the celebrations is strengthening economic and environmental ties between South Korea and Oman. Events like the Korean-Oman Green Industry Business Meet in September highlighted both nations’ commitment to sustainable development and green energy transitions. Ambassador Kim emphasised the importance of the Free Trade Agreement between South Korea and the GCC countries in expanding economic cooperation, with a focus on energy, technology, and sustainable development. In 2023, bilateral trade reached US$5.8 billion, with Oman exporting gas, crude oil, and petrochemical products to Korea, while Korea exports polycarboxylic acids, steel, vehicles, construction equipment, and electronic goods to Oman.

In addition to economic cooperation, cultural diplomacy is a key pillar of the celebrations. Events like the performance by the Korean band ADG7 and the upcoming Korea-Oman Taekwondo Championship for the Korean Ambassador’s Cup showcase Korea’s rich cultural heritage and deepen the cultural exchange between the two nations. The Korean National Day reception and the Korea-Oman Business Forum in December will further highlight the progress made over the past five decades. The South Korean Embassy also plans to reinvigorate the Korean Film Festival in Oman in 2025 to foster cultural understanding through the universal language of film.

South Korea’s leadership in technology and innovation has been a cornerstone of its relationship with Oman, and both nations are eager to explore further cooperation in digital transformation, smart cities, and AI-driven solutions. With Oman’s push for technological advancement under Vision 2040, South Korean companies are expected to play a crucial role in supporting the Sultanate’s development goals. Ambassador Kim emphasised the importance of leveraging technology and innovation to build a sustainable, innovative, and prosperous future for both countries.

As the celebrations continue throughout the year, Ambassador Kim highlighted the mutual respect and cooperation that have defined South Korea and Oman’s relationship since 1974. Both countries have worked together on political collaboration, economic ventures, and cultural exchanges, and look forward to continuing this partnership in the face of global challenges like climate change, economic recovery, and technological advancement. The 50 years of diplomatic success between South Korea and Oman serve as a testament to the strong bond between the two nations, and they remain committed to building on past successes for a sustainable and prosperous future.
