A 39-year-old Saudi Arabian citizen died Monday following a jet ski accident off the coast of West Java, Indonesia. The incident occurred at Bubalu Beach in Pelabuhanratu, Sukabumi, and resulted in serious injuries to an Indonesian woman who was also riding the watercraft. Indonesian authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, while the Saudi Embassy in Jakarta has begun arrangements for repatriation of the deceased’s remains.

The accident took place as the Saudi national and the Indonesian woman were attempting to return to shore on a rented jet ski. Local police report that a large wave may have contributed to the vehicle capsizing. The woman remains hospitalized in critical condition as of Tuesday morning, according to reports from the Sukabumi Regional General Hospital.

Investigation Underway Following Fatal Jet Ski Incident

Preliminary investigations by the Sukabumi Police suggest the jet ski was struck by a significant wave, causing it to overturn. Witnesses at the scene corroborated this account, describing a powerful impact. The area is a popular tourist destination known for its coastal waves, but conditions on Monday were reportedly more challenging than usual.

Details of the Rescue and Immediate Aftermath

Bystanders quickly responded to the incident, rescuing both individuals from the water. Despite wearing life jackets, both riders were initially found unconscious and floating. The Saudi citizen was transported to Pelabuhanratu Regional General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries. The Indonesian woman received immediate medical attention and remains under intensive care.

Eyewitness accounts indicate the jet ski continued moving forward through the waves before being hit by the large wave. One witness described the impact as forceful, stating the man’s head struck the jet ski before he entered the water. The incident highlights the potential dangers associated with water sports, even with safety equipment.

The Sukabumi Police are currently gathering further evidence, including statements from witnesses and an inspection of the jet ski itself. They are also reviewing weather reports from Monday to determine if any warnings were issued regarding wave conditions. The investigation aims to determine if negligence or mechanical failure played a role in the tragedy.

The Saudi Embassy in Jakarta has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family of the deceased. Arrangements are being made to handle the necessary documentation and facilitate the repatriation of the body to Saudi Arabia. The embassy has not released further details regarding the family’s wishes or timeline.

This incident comes amid increasing tourism to the Sukabumi region, particularly to Bubalu Beach. Local authorities are now reviewing safety protocols for water sports rentals and activities. This includes assessing the adequacy of warning systems and the training provided to jet ski operators and renters. Watercraft rentals are a significant part of the local economy.

However, the incident also raises broader questions about safety standards for tourists engaging in water activities in Indonesia. While Indonesia boasts stunning coastal landscapes and a thriving tourism industry, ensuring the safety of visitors remains a key challenge. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has previously emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and regulations.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian government is working to improve maritime safety across the archipelago. This includes investing in better search and rescue capabilities, as well as strengthening regulations for water sports operators. The country’s vast coastline and numerous islands present unique challenges for maritime safety enforcement.

The condition of the Indonesian woman remains the primary concern. Hospital officials have indicated her injuries are life-threatening, and her prognosis is uncertain. Updates on her condition are expected in the coming days. The incident has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from local residents and the wider community.

The Sukabumi Police anticipate completing their initial investigation within the next week. The findings will be submitted to the relevant authorities for review and potential legal action. The investigation will focus on determining whether any violations of safety regulations occurred and whether any parties bear responsibility for the jet ski accident. Further details regarding the investigation’s progress are expected to be released later this week.
