Human Rights Watch recently released a report stating that Russian forces have allegedly executed at least 15 Ukrainian soldiers who were attempting to surrender since December 2023. The organisation called for these alleged executions to be investigated as war crimes. Drone footage analyzed by HRW showed Ukrainian soldiers surrendering only to be shot by Russian troops, violating international humanitarian law. The Geneva Conventions specifically prohibit targeting combatants who are out of combat due to reasons such as surrender.

The footage from the drone showed a group of Ukrainian soldiers removing their body armor and helmet, facing down as Russian soldiers aimed their guns at them. Despite being no longer part of combat, these soldiers were shot by the Russian troops. The UN has also reported instances of Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russian captivity experiencing torture, including beatings, electric shocks, and mock executions, as well as sexual violence. The UN recorded “credible allegations” of Russian troops conducting executions of at least 32 Ukrainian prisoners of war.

A previous UN report detailed how Russian troops and the Wagner Group executed 15 Ukrainian prisoners of war during the first year of the full-scale invasion. The office of Ukraine’s Prosecutor General is currently conducting 27 criminal investigations into the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war. Despite the mounting evidence, Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied that his government has committed war crimes against Ukrainians.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the atrocities committed by Russian forces are becoming increasingly clear. The deliberate targeting and execution of surrendering Ukrainian soldiers is a blatant violation of international law and must be addressed as such. Human Rights Watch’s report sheds light on the ongoing human rights abuses and war crimes being committed in Ukraine and calls for accountability for those responsible.

The evidence presented by HRW, as well as the UN reports, highlights the urgent need for a thorough investigation into these alleged war crimes. The international community must come together to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are held accountable for their actions. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has already resulted in immense suffering for the Ukrainian people, and it is crucial that justice is served to prevent further atrocities from occurring.

The international community must work together to put an end to the violence and human rights abuses in Ukraine. It is essential that all parties involved in the conflict adhere to international humanitarian law and respect the rights of all individuals, including prisoners of war. The atrocities committed by Russian forces must not go unpunished, and the victims deserve justice for the crimes committed against them. Only by holding those responsible to account can we hope to prevent such atrocities from occurring in the future.
