In an effort to boost sustainability and the use of clean energy, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is promoting the use of solar power in the country. The initiative, in line with the Qatar National Renewable Energy Strategy (QNRES), aims to increase renewable power generation to about 4 GW by 2030 to reduce the carbon footprint.
In the first phase of the project, Kahramaa is accrediting solar panels and inverters from distributors and manufacturers, with the goal of providing consumers with the opportunity to install them at their facilities and feed surplus power to the grid. This initiative will allow all types of customers to benefit from the service, ultimately reducing electricity bills and increasing awareness about renewable energy participation.
Director of Production Planning and Business Development at Kahramaa, Eng. Abdul Rahman Al Baker, highlighted the importance of diversifying energy sources to achieve the goals of QNRES. Currently, 95% of electricity in Qatar is produced through thermal units, with the Al Kharsaah solar power plant contributing 700 megawatts to the energy mix.
As part of the distributed renewable energy programme, Kahramaa is now accepting applications for accredited solar panels and inverters from distributors and manufacturers. This programme will implement net-billing, allowing prosumers to sell surplus power generated to the grid at a fixed price. The bi-directional meter on the customer’s premise will measure electricity consumed and exported surplus, with Kahramaa crediting the consumer account for surplus to offset future consumption, resulting in lower electricity bills and encouraging investments in solar PV.
The renewable energy programme in Qatar will open up a market for renewable energy by increasing the number of distributors and manufacturers, creating a sustainable environment for the use of solar power. The strategic plan aims to reduce the country’s carbon footprint by increasing renewable energy to 4 GW, constituting 18% of general electricity production in the country.
With a clear strategy and policy for installing solar power systems at various facilities, including factories and farms, Kahramaa is paving the way for a more sustainable energy future in Qatar. The focus on promoting clean energy and reducing carbon emissions demonstrates Qatar’s commitment to environmental conservation and the transition to renewable energy sources.
