The recent ban on all single-use plastic and paper bags across retail outlets in Dubai has led shoppers to adopt the use of reusable bags. Initially, some individuals were apprehensive about the switch, but they have since embraced the change. The ban, coupled with the lack of free alternatives, has encouraged people like Mohammed Yusuf to make reusable bags a part of their daily routine.

The adoption of eco-friendly bags has become increasingly popular, with supermarkets like Al Maya experiencing a boost in reusable bag sales since the ban was imposed. The government has enforced a penalty of Dh200 for non-compliance with the policy, with penalties doubling for repeated offenses. The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism urges the public to report stores that do not adhere to the ban.

Kamal Vachani, a partner at Al Maya Group, commended the public for their high level of awareness and willingness to embrace environmentally-friendly alternatives. He emphasized the UAE’s commitment to promoting sustainable solutions for a cleaner and greener environment. Other supermarket chains, such as Carrefour, have also reported an increase in reusable bag sales, indicating a shift towards more sustainable choices.

Residents like Beth Garner and Siraya Chaudhry have made conscious efforts to reduce their use of single-use bags even before the ban was implemented. They have been proactive in carrying reusable bags for shopping trips and find it rewarding to see others in the community do the same. Reusable bags have not only changed shopping habits but also provide practical benefits in terms of durability and convenience for everyday tasks.

Younger generations, like teenager Ayah Chaudhry, are also embracing the use of reusable bags over plastic ones. The transition to reusable bags has been well-received by individuals like Shoaib Gill, who find them to be more durable and effective for carrying items. Keeping reusable bags handy in the car ensures that they are always prepared for impromptu shopping trips, reducing the need for excessive plastic bag usage and contributing to environmental sustainability.Overall, the ban on single-use bags has successfully encouraged a shift towards more sustainable practices and heightened awareness of environmental issues among residents of Dubai. By promoting the use of reusable bags and penalizing non-compliance, the government is paving the way for a cleaner and greener future for the city.
