Qatar-based Sudanese artist and music producer Sammany Hajo recently participated in the US Department of State’s Global Music Diplomacy Initiative. This initiative aims to use music as a diplomatic platform to promote peace and democracy. As part of the initiative, Sammany and other international musicians and music professionals traveled to various cities in the United States, engaging in discussions, workshops, and collaborative sessions with American counterparts. They explored topics such as preserving musical and cultural heritage, music management and production best practices, and using music to promote community development and engage disenfranchised youth.

Reflecting on his experience, Sammany stated that he found the journey to be inspiring, especially as an artist heavily influenced by American music. He highlighted various highlights of the trip, including meeting with Conductor and Music Director Luke Frazier, visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and performing at the Greenwood Social Hall in Kansas City. The performance in Kansas City, a UNESCO City of Music, allowed the participants to collaborate and strengthen their bond through a shared love and appreciation for music.

Sammany shared that the ideas he gathered from his experience will not only contribute to his personal growth as an artist but also benefit his work at Music Lab and the music community in Doha. The US Embassy in Qatar aims to achieve a broader impact through its exchange programs, including the IVLP. Every year, the Embassy nominates Qatari professionals and rising leaders for these programs, allowing them to experience the United States firsthand and build lasting relationships with American counterparts. This year’s participants explored various topics such as good governance, entrepreneurship, women’s leadership, cultural heritage preservation, journalism, and climate change.

Sammany’s participation in the Global Music Diplomacy Initiative highlights the importance of using music as a tool for diplomacy and cultural exchange. Through collaborations with American counterparts and engagement in industry discussions, Sammany and other participants gained valuable insights into the music industry and its potential for promoting social change. The performance at the Greenwood Social Hall exemplified the power of music to bring people together and create connections across different cultures and backgrounds.

The impact of Sammany’s IVLP journey extends beyond his personal growth and music career. The ideas and experiences he gained during the program will also benefit the music community in Doha, fostering collaboration and innovation within the local music scene. By participating in exchange programs like the IVLP, artists and professionals can broaden their horizons, gain new perspectives, and forge connections that transcend borders and boundaries, ultimately contributing to a more interconnected and culturally rich global music community.
