Rouda Al Attiya, a member of Qatar Foundation’s Communications team, shared her personal journey of how sports played a significant role in shaping her identity as a Qatari woman. She recalled how her passion for sports began in the heat of Ras Laffan, playing on makeshift pitches in her grandmother’s yard and later in the alleys of Alsadd. She described sports as her sanctuary and stage, where she believed she was destined for football greatness at the age of 12. Al Attiya highlighted Qatar’s transformation in placing females at the forefront of sports as a testament to the nation’s journey towards excellence.

Starting her journey in more modest settings, Al Attiya emphasized the importance of her early experiences at her grandparents’ house in shaping her love for sports. She credited her brother Nasser for developing her street-style skills, which later led her to compete in formal competitions at Qatar Foundation’s Qatar Academy school. She expressed gratitude for the lifelong friendships and sisterhood formed through sports, noting that they helped shape her character and teach her resilience and fortitude.

Beyond football, Al Attiya embraced a variety of sports in Qatar, from basketball to volleyball to Padel. She described how sports have evolved in the country and how she has adapted to these changes, showcasing her capabilities and passions. Al Attiya reflected on her place in Qatari sportsmanship, seeing herself as just one thread in the rich tapestry of sports in the nation. She emphasized how sports served as a lens through which she discovered her own potential and learned to thrive in an ever-evolving sports landscape.

As Qatar moves towards a new era where women’s voices are heard louder in stadiums, Al Attiya sees her personal journey as reflecting the ambition and enthusiasm shared by many women in the country. She highlighted the transformative power of sports in shaping not only her life but also the vibrant Qatari society as a whole. Al Attiya’s role as a Senior Newsroom Specialist at Qatar Foundation, along with her background in media production, showcases her dedication to sports and her active participation in various sporting tournaments, including local Padel competitions and creating events for her friends in basketball and football.

In conclusion, Al Attiya’s story is a testament to the impact of sports on personal development and identity, especially for women in Qatar. Her journey from humble beginnings to embracing a variety of sports reflects the transformative power of sports in shaping individuals and society as a whole. As Qatar continues to make strides in promoting women in sports, Al Attiya remains a passionate advocate for the role of sports in building resilience, fortitude, and camaraderie among athletes. Her story serves as an inspiration for women who seek to explore their capabilities and passions through the lens of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
