Qatar is making significant strides in developing a state-of-the-art transport network in line with the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030. The Ministry of Transport (MoT) is spearheading efforts to support the transformation strategy for electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. Najla Al Jaber, Head of Land Transport Systems and Policies Department at MoT, highlighted the ministry’s plans to establish a certification center for electric vehicles, develop policies to encourage their acquisition and use, and mitigate the impact of transportation on health and the environment.

The ministry is conducting studies to enhance services and systems that promote the use of electric vehicles, including buses powered by electricity. MoT aims to reduce carbon emissions and develop a standard system that serves to expand the scope of EVs’ use, aligning with the country’s goals of achieving economic and environmental balance. Additionally, MoT plans to establish a center to enhance and develop standards related to the electric vehicle industry and batteries.

Qatar’s efforts to transition towards electric vehicles are part of its strategy to achieve sustainable development and economic diversification. The country aims to become a leader in green and smart transportation and is on track to have a 100 percent electric public bus fleet by 2030. This initiative aligns with Qatar’s vision of achieving zero-emission transportation and its commitment to the Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

Qatar’s achievements in the electric mobility sector have been recognized globally, with the country ranking ninth in the ‘Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index (GEMRIX) 2023’ by Arthur D Little. Recently, Qatar hosted the Autonomous e-Mobility Forum, where MoT presented its Autonomous Vehicle Strategy and highlighted its plans for the gradual electrification of public buses. The forum aimed to discuss key topics related to autonomous and electric vehicles and promote sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.

Through its initiatives and plans, Qatar is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable transportation and innovation. The country’s focus on developing a comprehensive, integrated, and eco-friendly transportation system underscores its commitment to achieving the goals set forth in the Qatar National Vision 2030. By embracing electric mobility and advancing towards a zero-emission transportation system, Qatar is paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future for its citizens and the environment.
