Qatar’s tourism sector is experiencing significant growth and is expected to continue on a positive trajectory in the coming years. According to economic experts, the non-energy sector in Qatar will be a major driver of growth, with tourism being one of the key sectors leading the way. The country’s tourism industry is closely aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030 economic framework, which aims to diversify and enhance the economy through various development efforts.
Despite facing pressures from slowing global economies, Qatar remains relatively positive due to strong bilateral deals and investments. The country recently signed significant supply contracts with India and Taiwan, further boosting its economic outlook. With a projected GDP growth of 2.2 percent for this year and expected to rise to 2.9 percent by 2025, Qatar’s economy is set to continue its growth trajectory.
The World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) 2024 Economic Impact Research forecasts that Qatar’s travel and tourism sector will make a significant contribution to the country’s economy, representing 11.3 percent of the total. Additionally, over 334,500 jobs are expected to be created within the sector, making up 15.8 percent of the total workforce. International travellers are forecasted to spend a record-breaking QR69.6bn this year, while domestic spending is projected to reach QR12bn.
The success of Qatar’s travel and tourism sector can be attributed to the government’s commitment to collaboration between the public and private sectors. By creating diverse and immersive experiences for visitors, the sector has reached new heights in terms of GDP contribution, job creation, and domestic traveller spend. In 2024, the sector’s GDP contribution grew by 31 percent, reaching a record-breaking QR81.2bn, demonstrating its importance to the national economy.
Qatar’s tourism strategy is guided by the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030, with the goal of attracting 6 million visitors annually and increasing the sector’s contribution to GDP to 12 percent by 2030. With strong growth projections, successful collaborations between sectors, and a strategic vision for the future, Qatar’s tourism sector is poised for continued success in the years to come.
