‘Prevention Shield 4’: Saudi-US joint military exercise boosts readiness for weapons of mass destruction

The recent “Shield of Prevention 4” joint military exercise held in Dhahran by the Saudi Eastern Command and the US Central Command was a demonstration of readiness against weapons of mass destruction. Various Saudi government agencies, including the Ministry of Defense’s Health Services, the General Directorate of Civil Defense, the Ministry of Health, and the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, participated in the exercise. The main aim of this exercise was to enhance preparedness against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear dangers, as well as to improve coordination and integration between the Saudi and American forces.

Colonel Turki bin Salem Al-Sumairi, the commander of the joint battalion involved in the exercise, highlighted the importance of “Shield of Prevention 4” in bolstering capabilities to manage threats posed by WMDs. The exercise focused on integrating concepts, procedures, and skills between the Saudi and American forces to increase awareness of WMD risks. Field exercises were conducted to test the readiness of national response plans to WMD threats, assess the effectiveness of communication and information exchange, and coordinate response activities among the participating parties. Simulated ammunition was used to manage crises resulting from various WMD scenarios, and drills were held by the health services of the Ministry of Defense and other involved bodies to enhance joint operational capabilities in handling chemical and biological incidents.

The collaboration between the Saudi and US forces during the “Shield of Prevention 4” exercise showcased the ongoing efforts to strengthen preparedness against WMD threats. By conducting field exercises and drills, the participating forces were able to evaluate and improve their response capabilities to potential WMD scenarios.
