The Oral Health Promotion and Prevention Department at the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) in Doha, Qatar, recently participated in the 2024 Spring Break Activities in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. The department sent seven teams of dental professionals, including dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants, to 14 out of 16 spring activity centers across the country. Over 2,000 students benefited from this initiative.

Dr. Najat Al Yafei, the Manager of the Oral Health Promotion & Prevention Department, outlined the comprehensive schedule that was designed for the students. The schedule featured lectures and activities that were tailored to different age groups. Young learners at the primary school level and adolescents at the preparatory and secondary levels had the opportunity to participate in a range of activities over two days at each spring center.

The activities included assessing students’ knowledge about oral health, introducing them to the structure and types of teeth, discussing the connection between oral health and general health, as well as highlighting the impact of diet on oral health. A drawing activity encouraged students to serve as role models for oral hygiene. On the first day, students were given a homework task to examine their family members and report back with the results on the second day.

The second day focused on practical training, where students learned how to use toothbrushes and miswak. They were also introduced to various fields of dentistry and had the opportunity to role-play as dentists and patients. Dental checkups were conducted using mobile dental units and single-use tools. The activities concluded with a best smile contest and the distribution of participation certificates.

Dr. Al Yafei stressed the importance of this initiative in instilling healthy oral hygiene habits from an early age, raising awareness about the importance of preventing oral diseases, and building a generation equipped with sustainable oral health practices. She highlighted the collaborative efforts between the oral health and education sectors in achieving public health goals and the 2030 vision. These activities are not just awareness campaigns but an investment in the future of upcoming generations.

The collaboration between the Oral Health Promotion and Prevention Department at PHCC and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education exemplifies the commitment to promoting oral health among students in Qatar. By actively engaging students in educational activities, the initiative aims to empower them with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain good oral hygiene practices. The emphasis on prevention and early intervention underscores the importance of addressing oral health issues before they escalate into more serious problems.

Through interactive sessions, practical training, and engaging activities, students are not only learning about oral health but also actively participating in their own oral care. By encouraging students to take ownership of their oral health and serving as role models for their peers and family members, the initiative is fostering a culture of healthy habits that can have a long-lasting impact on overall well-being. These efforts are integral to building a healthier and more informed generation that understands the significance of oral health in relation to general health.

The success of the 2024 Spring Break Activities demonstrates the positive outcomes that can be achieved through collaborative efforts between healthcare providers and education institutions. By reaching out to students at a young age, the initiative is effectively shaping the future of oral health in Qatar. The importance of preventive measures and early education cannot be overstated when it comes to maintaining optimal oral health and overall well-being. As these students grow up with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in oral hygiene, the benefits will extend to their families, communities, and future generations. Investing in oral health awareness and education today is a strategic step towards building a healthier tomorrow for Qatar.
