Peru has made significant progress in the realm of digital currency with the launch of a pilot Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) program in collaboration with Viettel Peru. This initiative marks a significant milestone in modernizing the country’s financial infrastructure and incorporating digital currency into the financial system. The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) aims to enhance user adoption and address barriers to entry through this pilot program, which involves working closely with various stakeholders to ensure that the system design and functionality align with the BCRP’s requirements.

The selection of Viettel Peru S.A.C. as the first participant in the CBDC pilot program was made following a rigorous selection process conducted by the BCRP. This decision was formalized through Resolution No. 0009-2024-BCRP, establishing Viettel Peru S.A.C. as the lead company for the pilot. The collaboration between the BCRP and Viettel Peru marks the beginning of a year-long pilot that will pave the way for the integration of digital currency into Peru’s financial ecosystem.

In a report published in March 2023, the BCRP outlined the challenges faced by Peru in transitioning from a cash-based economy to a digital one. These challenges include low financial inclusion and high payment service costs, which hinder the country’s progress towards a more modern and efficient payment system. The report underscored the importance of addressing these challenges to achieve policy goals such as increasing digital payments among the unbanked population and fostering trust in payment systems.

The BCRP is evaluating three potential options to address these challenges: maintaining the status quo, improving access and interoperability of existing payment systems, and introducing a CBDC. The report concluded that maintaining the status quo is not a viable option, while options 2 and 3 represent complementary policy strategies to enhance Peru’s payment landscape. Introducing a digital currency is expected to bring about various benefits, including instantaneous and final payments, universal accessibility, and multiple use cases that can improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the country’s payment systems.

The implementation of the CBDC pilot program in Peru signifies a significant step towards leveraging digital technologies to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of financial services in the country. By partnering with Viettel Peru S.A.C., the BCRP is poised to explore the potential benefits of digital currency and drive innovation in the financial sector. As the pilot program progresses, stakeholders will play a crucial role in providing feedback and insights to shape the future of digital currency in Peru and ensure that it meets the needs of the population.

Overall, Peru’s foray into the world of CBDCs demonstrates a commitment to embracing digital innovation and driving economic progress through modernizing payment systems. The pilot program with Viettel Peru S.A.C. represents a collaborative effort to explore the potential of digital currency and its implications for the country’s financial ecosystem. With careful planning and strategic partnerships, Peru is poised to unlock new opportunities and pave the way for a more efficient and inclusive financial system powered by digital technologies.
