The Grand Mufti of Oman, Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalili, recently issued a statement in response to a tragic shooting incident that occurred in the Wadi Al Kabir area of Muscat on July 15, 2024. In his statement, the Grand Mufti expressed his sadness over the event, which resulted in the deaths of several individuals, including a security officer. He emphasized that such acts of aggression only serve to fuel hatred and conflict, and called for mutual respect and understanding among different communities in the Sultanate of Oman. The Grand Mufti extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished for the quick recovery of those who were injured.

The shooting incident in Wadi Al Kabir claimed the lives of five people, including a police officer, and resulted in injuries to 28 others, including members of the police force and emergency services. The Royal Oman Police confirmed that three perpetrators were also killed during the incident. The injured individuals were promptly taken to healthcare facilities for treatment, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing. The Grand Mufti commended the efforts of the national security and military agencies involved in responding to the incident and called on all members of society to cooperate with them to safeguard the nation’s stability and the safety of its citizens.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalili stressed the importance of preserving religious sanctities and places of worship as a red line that should not be crossed in moments of conflict or tension. He called for an atmosphere of mutual respect and familiarity among individuals from different backgrounds to replace feelings of alienation and discord. The Grand Mufti emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among the people of Oman for the greater good of society as a whole. His statement highlighted the values of compassion, understanding, and peace as essential principles to guide interactions between different groups within the nation.

The tragic events in Wadi Al Kabir serve as a reminder of the fragility of peace and stability in any community, and the importance of maintaining open lines of communication and collaboration between all members of society. The Grand Mufti’s message of condolence and solidarity with the victims’ families underscores the need for compassion and support during times of crisis. His call for unity and cooperation reinforces the idea that a harmonious society is built on the foundation of respect and understanding among its members. By coming together to address challenges and confront divisions, the people of Oman can work towards a brighter and more secure future for themselves and future generations.

As the investigation into the shooting incident continues, it is essential for authorities and community leaders to remain committed to upholding justice and accountability. The efforts of the Royal Oman Police and other agencies in responding to the tragic event are commendable, and cooperation from the public will be crucial in ensuring that such incidents do not repeat in the future. The Grand Mufti’s statement serves as a call to action for all individuals to work towards a more peaceful and inclusive society, where differences are respected and celebrated. Through dialogue, empathy, and a shared commitment to the well-being of all members of society, Oman can move forward from this tragedy with a renewed sense of unity and purpose.
