A group of Omani companies in the fish marketing and sales sector has begun exporting fish products to China, marking a significant step towards achieving Oman’s Vision 2040 objectives for the fisheries industry. Led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, this initiative aims to boost profitability and sustainability in the sector by expanding international reach and increasing exports to new global markets. The recent development comes following a formal agreement or “protocol” signed between the governments of Oman and China, establishing key inspection, quarantine, and veterinary health standards to facilitate the export of Omani fish products to China.
Dr. Masoud bin Suleiman Al Azri, Director General of Agricultural and Fisheries Marketing at the Ministry, highlighted the high quality and safety of Omani fish products, which adhere to international health and safety standards. This has enabled 23 Omani companies to register and receive certification in fish quality control, ensuring that only those meeting China’s strict export standards are able to export their products. Regular inspections will be conducted to maintain these standards and ensure competitiveness in the global market.
The implementation of these exports is expected to enhance economic cooperation between Oman and China, opening up new trade opportunities and contributing to food security. With fish production in Oman reaching 793,000 tonnes in 2023, valued at OMR 531 million, and exports reaching around 324,000 tonnes valued at OMR 189 million, the Ministry is actively working with private sector partners to explore new markets for Omani fish products. The goal is to further enhance the competitiveness of Oman’s fisheries in the international arena.
