The Sultanate of Oman is bracing for heavy rains that are expected to hit the country on Thursday, prompting emergency services to issue a warning urging people to exercise caution. The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre has predicted that a trough of low pressure will affect the country from Thursday until Saturday, with the peak of the unstable weather condition expected on Thursday afternoon. The governorates of Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, South Al Batinah, Al Dakhiliyah, Muscat, and North Al Sharqiyah are likely to experience rainfall ranging between 20mm and 80mm.

The Director of the Department of Forecasts and Early Warning System at the Civil Aviation Authority, Nasser Said Al Ismaili, has stated that the northern governorates of Oman will also be moderately impacted by the weather condition. As a precautionary measure, the National Committee for Emergency Management has activated national centres, subcommittees, and other sectors tasked with addressing adverse weather conditions, particularly in the governorates of Muscat, Dhofar, Al Dakhiliyah, North Al Sharqiyah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah. Additionally, the Ministry of Education has announced the activation of distance learning systems in all public, private, and foreign schools across Oman on May 2, with classes set to resume on May 5, 2024.

The Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation has granted private higher education institutions and vocational colleges the authority to adapt their decisions based on the prevailing circumstances. This decision underscores the importance of prioritizing public safety amid changing weather conditions. Work and rehabilitation programs in all government and private rehabilitation centers and nurseries in all governorates of Oman have been suspended on Thursday in light of the adverse weather situation. The Civil Aviation Authority has advised the public to take precautions during the rainfall to avoid flash floods, including checking visibility levels and sea states before sailing and following weather bulletins issued.

Overall, as Oman prepares for heavy rains and potential flash floods, it is crucial for individuals to follow safety instructions from emergency services and authorities. By taking necessary precautions and staying informed about the weather conditions, the impact of the adverse weather situation can be minimized. Additionally, the activation of national emergency centers and the suspension of classes and programs demonstrate the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety during this challenging weather event.
