Oman leads United Nations Environment Assembly meeting

The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, recently chaired the meeting of the Executive Office of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) via video conferencing. During the meeting, members discussed the roles and responsibilities of the Executive Office during the 7th session of the UNEA, as well as the adoption of a roadmap for their tasks and the methodology for preparing topics for the Assembly. They also reviewed a draft document on “Subject Assessment” to build on the benefits from the previous session. Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, stressed the importance of global collaboration to address environmental crises impacting many parts of the world.

Anger Anderson, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, highlighted the significance of the current session and the role of the UNEA in undertaking various projects. The meeting also approved the proposed agenda and reviewed the programme of functioning of the UNEA Executive Office during Oman’s presidency of the current session (2024-2025).

The meeting aimed to familiarize the members of the Executive Office with their roles and responsibilities during the 7th session of the UNEA. The Executive Office discussed the importance of working together as a global community to make critical decisions in response to environmental crises around the world. This session emphasized the need for cooperation and collaboration to address pressing environmental issues.

The members of the Executive Office also focused on developing a roadmap for their tasks during the upcoming session of the UNEA and discussed the methodology for preparing topics for the Assembly. The meeting included a review of a draft document on “Subject Assessment” to build upon the outcomes and lessons learned from the previous session. Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri highlighted the urgency of taking action to address environmental challenges and the importance of working together as a united front.
