The Sultanate of Oman celebrated International Museum Day on May 18, highlighting the theme ‘Museums for Education and Research’. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MoHT) revealed that Oman boasts 11 government museums and a total of 19 licensed museums and heritage houses, welcoming thousands of visitors each year. The MoHT organizes various events, seminars, and workshops in partnership with the International Museum Day celebrations to underscore the crucial role of museums in promoting education, research, and cultural understanding.

The International Museum Day, established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), serves as a global platform to emphasize the significance of museums in cultural exchange and development. Museums worldwide join efforts to organize events, exhibitions, and educational programs focusing on this theme, highlighting museums’ active and valuable participation in society. Since 2020, the International Museum Day has supported a range of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with this year’s focus on inclusive education, lifelong learning opportunities, industry innovation, and sustainable industrialization.

Efforts to enhance the role of museums in Oman align with the country’s strategic programs outlined in the 10th Five-Year Development Plan and the “Oman Vision 2040”. Museums play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage, fostering tourism, and creating direct and indirect employment opportunities. The MoHT is involved in several projects aimed at developing and modernizing museums, exhibiting treasures collected through archaeological missions across Oman, and enhancing visitor experiences through engaging displays and interactive tools.

Notable museums in Oman include the Oman National Museum, which houses over 7,000 artifacts across 14 galleries, offering a comprehensive look at Oman’s rich history and cultural heritage. The Museum of the Frankincense Land in Salalah showcases archaeological discoveries and maritime history, while projects like the Fatah Al Khair Museum in Sur and the Natural History Museum highlight Omani cultural and natural heritage. The Omani and French Museum near the Qasr Al Alam Palace and the Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum in Bait Al Falaj Fort provide insights into Oman’s historical ties and military history.

The MoHT is dedicated to preserving, enhancing, and promoting Oman’s cultural heritage through a variety of museum projects, exhibitions, and initiatives. The ongoing development of museum systems and exhibits aims to educate, inspire, and engage visitors while contributing to the preservation and sustainability of Oman’s rich history. By fostering local community development, encouraging tourism, and supporting museums facing operational challenges, Oman continues to showcase its heritage and strengthen its position as a hub for cultural exchange and research.

In conclusion, International Museum Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the importance of museums as educational and research institutions that play a vital role in preserving, promoting, and sharing cultural heritage. The Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to enhancing its museums and heritage sites reflects its dedication to fostering knowledge, science, and cultural understanding among researchers and visitors. Through ongoing projects and collaborations, Oman continues to support the growth and development of its museum sector, contributing to the country’s tourism industry, economic growth, and cultural enrichment.
