Oman and Korea Celebrate 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations

The Foreign Ministry in Muscat recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Oman and the Republic of Korea. The ceremony included the unveiling of a commemorative slogan symbolizing the strong ties between the two countries. Acting in conjunction with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the celebration highlighted the progress being made in various sectors, including green hydrogen and clean energy. Sheikh Khalifa Ali Al Harthy, Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Political Affairs, mentioned that efforts are underway to streamline visa processes for Omanis traveling to Korea. The trade exchange between Oman and Korea surpassed $5 billion in 2023, with a recent memorandum of understanding signed to enhance trade and investment opportunities.

Ambassador Kiejoo Kim of the Republic of Korea praised the close relationship between the two countries, emphasizing that Korea is Oman’s third-largest trading partner. The volume of bilateral trade continues to grow, reaching over $5 billion in 2023. Kim highlighted key measures to further enhance economic cooperation, including the free trade agreement between Korea and GCC states. He also mentioned various agreements aimed at promoting trade and investment between the two countries. Kim acknowledged the importance of Oman Vision 2040 in fostering more impactful collaborations, particularly in renewable energy and environmental technologies.

The establishment of diplomatic relations in 1974 laid the foundation for cooperation in political, diplomatic, economic, and cultural spheres between Oman and Korea. The partnership continues to flourish, with both countries actively engaged in furthering their relationship in various sectors. The commemorative ceremony and the launch of a special slogan exemplified the enduring strength of the diplomatic ties between Oman and Korea. The signing of the memorandum of understanding on trade and investment further solidified the commitment to enhancing economic cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations.

Sheikh Khalifa Ali Al Harthy highlighted the progress being made in green hydrogen and clean energy sectors, underscoring the potential for increased collaboration in these areas. Efforts to simplify visa procedures for Omani travelers to Korea reflect the commitment to facilitating cross-border exchanges and fostering closer ties between the two nations. With trade between Oman and Korea exceeding $5 billion in 2023, there is a mutual desire to enhance economic cooperation through various agreements and frameworks. The future-oriented partnerships envisioned by both countries aim to leverage the strengths of each nation and drive innovation in key sectors.

Ambassador Kiejoo Kim’s speech emphasized the importance of Oman Vision 2040 in guiding the trajectory of economic cooperation and partnership between Oman and Korea. By focusing on renewable energy, environment-related technology, and other key sectors, both countries can work together to achieve sustainable growth and development. The celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations served as a testament to the enduring friendship and collaboration between Oman and Korea. The milestones achieved over the past five decades reflect the shared commitment to deepening cooperation and fostering mutual prosperity. Through continued dialogue and collaboration, the partnership between Oman and Korea is poised to reach new heights in the years to come.
