National human rights institutions like the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) and the Qatar National Human Rights Committee play a crucial role as bridges between governments, companies, civil society, and affected communities. This facilitates dialogue, enhances accountability, and ensures a human rights-based approach in business operations. H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah emphasized this during the annual conference of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions on business and human rights. She highlighted the importance of national institutions in translating United Nations guidelines into realities on the ground, providing guidance to states and companies, monitoring and reporting on the impact of business activities on human rights, holding violators accountable, and empowering vulnerable individuals and communities to participate in business-related processes.

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, with companies operating globally and impacting societies beyond their headquarters, it is essential to ensure that human rights are respected in all business operations. The ongoing evolution of the global economy has brought new challenges and exposed weaknesses in upholding human rights. Irresponsible business practices have resulted in serious abuses such as labour exploitation, discrimination, and environmental degradation. National human rights institutions are committed to promoting sustainable and just economic development that respects all humans and the planet. With their strong mandate, they lead the way in promoting and protecting human rights in the business sector.

The role of national institutions in ensuring accountability for human rights violations related to business activities is crucial. They advocate for the development of laws, policies, and practices in line with international human rights standards, and provide a voice to the voiceless. By monitoring and reporting on the impact of business activities on human rights, national institutions play a key role in promoting transparency and accountability. They also facilitate access to remedies for victims of human rights abuses, empowering individuals and communities to seek justice. With companies playing a central role in shaping communities and contributing to growth and development, it is essential for national institutions to hold them accountable and advocate for the protection of human rights.

In today’s globalized world, it is more important than ever for national human rights institutions to ensure that economic development is sustainable, just, and respects the rights of all individuals. With companies operating across borders and impacting societies worldwide, the responsibility falls on national institutions to monitor and report on the impact of business activities on human rights. By advocating for the implementation of international human rights standards and holding states and companies accountable for human rights violations, national institutions play a crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability in the business sector. Empowering vulnerable individuals and communities to participate in business-related processes and providing access to remedies for victims of human rights abuses are essential steps in ensuring that the rights of all individuals are respected in the global economy.

In conclusion, national human rights institutions like the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions and the Qatar National Human Rights Committee play a vital role in promoting and protecting human rights in the business sector. By providing guidance to states and companies, monitoring and reporting on the impact of business activities on human rights, advocating for the rights of vulnerable individuals and communities, and ensuring access to remedies for victims of human rights abuses, national institutions are essential in promoting accountability and transparency in the global economy. As companies continue to play a central role in shaping communities and contributing to growth and development, it is essential for national institutions to hold them accountable and advocate for the respect of human rights in all business operations. Through their unique and strong mandate, national institutions lead the way in ensuring that economic development is sustainable, just, and respects the rights of all individuals.
