The national campaign to combat invasive birds in the Sultanate of Oman has been making great progress, with more than 923,000 invasive birds eliminated as of May 6, 2024. The Main Committee for Combating Invasive Birds, led by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, discussed the latest developments in the campaign across various governorates and laid out a sustainability plan for the future. This campaign, launched in December 2022, has seen significant success in reducing the population of invasive birds in different areas of the country.

One of the governorates that has seen a substantial reduction in invasive bird populations is North Al Batinah, where 559,453 invasive birds have been combated since the start of the campaign. In South Al Batinah, 188,333 invasive birds have been controlled since January 2024. The Dhofar Governorate has also seen positive results, with 126,659 invasive birds eliminated with the help of local community members who have joined teams and subcommittees to tackle this issue. In Muscat Governorate, 48,634 invasive birds were controlled through collaboration with various government sectors, using effective mechanisms to combat these birds.

The Main Committee emphasized the importance of measuring the environmental impact of the control campaign, as it plays a significant role in raising awareness among the Omani population and encouraging active participation in reducing the spread of invasive birds. By involving local communities and utilizing proven methods, the campaign has been able to make a tangible difference in reducing the invasive bird population in targeted areas. This collaborative approach has been essential in achieving the success of the campaign and ensuring the sustainability of its efforts in the future.

The success of the national campaign to combat invasive birds in Oman underscores the importance of proactive measures in addressing environmental challenges. By eliminating over 923,000 invasive birds, the campaign has demonstrated the impact of coordinated efforts to preserve the country’s natural ecosystems. The involvement of local communities in combating invasive species not only contributes to the success of the campaign but also fosters a sense of environmental responsibility among Omani citizens.

Moving forward, the Main Committee for Combating Invasive Birds will continue to work towards sustainable solutions for managing invasive bird populations in Oman. By engaging with local communities, raising awareness about the environmental impact of invasive birds, and implementing effective control measures, the committee aims to further reduce the spread of these birds and protect the country’s biodiversity. Through ongoing collaboration and a commitment to environmental stewardship, Oman is taking significant steps towards preserving its natural habitats and safeguarding its wildlife for future generations.

In conclusion, the progress made by the national campaign to combat invasive birds in Oman is a testament to the country’s dedication to environmental conservation. With over 923,000 invasive birds eliminated and a sustainable plan in place for the future, Oman is taking proactive steps towards protecting its natural heritage. By involving local communities, measuring the environmental impact of control efforts, and implementing effective strategies, the campaign has achieved significant success in reducing the threat posed by invasive bird species. The ongoing efforts of the Main Committee for Combating Invasive Birds serve as a model for proactive conservation initiatives in the region, highlighting the importance of community involvement and environmental awareness in preserving biodiversity.
