The Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Doha, Qatar recently launched a series of literary events and competitions for the summer of 2024. The aim is to promote a love for reading and enhance literary skills among students of all age groups. The events include the “Summer Activities” program, which encourages children to engage in various activities inspired by books available in the open library on the e-library system. These activities are designed to help children develop their motor and creative skills through manual, environmental, sports, and other types of activities.

One of the key competitions introduced as part of these literary events is the “Summer of Reading” competition. This competition challenges students to read as many diverse books as possible during the summer holidays. This competition is facilitated through the “Maktabati” website on the electronic library system. Additionally, the Ministry has also introduced the “Mobile Library,” which offers a wide range of resources that cater to students’ interests and provide interactive activities for them to engage in.

Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs at the MoEHE, Maha Zaid Al Rawli, expressed how these programs play a crucial role in fostering a love for reading among children and youth. She emphasized that reading is a fundamental tool for enhancing mental capabilities, language skills, research abilities, and exploration skills among students. Al Rawli further highlighted how these programs and activities are instrumental in strengthening the level of reading, cultural awareness, and literary consciousness in society, which ultimately has a positive impact on future generations.

The Ministry has taken proactive steps to activate learning resource centers in the seven summer centers located in public schools. These centers offer various reading programs for students to utilize their free time in activities that stimulate thought and creativity. The Ministry has urged all schools and parents to encourage students to participate in these programs actively to benefit from the opportunities they provide. By actively participating in these programs, students can enhance their reading skills, develop a broader cultural awareness, and improve their literary consciousness.

Overall, the literary events and competitions launched by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Doha, Qatar, for the summer of 2024 are designed to promote a love for reading and enhance literary skills among students of all age groups. Through innovative programs like the “Summer Activities” program, the “Summer of Reading” competition, and the “Mobile Library,” the Ministry aims to encourage students to engage in diverse reading opportunities and foster a culture of reading and creativity. By actively participating in these programs, students can develop essential skills, such as critical thinking, creativity, and language proficiency, that will benefit them in their academic and personal lives.
