Doha, Qatar – The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in Qatar has released a critically edited edition of “Hashiyat Al-Rammassi ‘ala Sharh Al-Tata’i ‘ala Mukhtasar Khalil,” a foundational text in Maliki jurisprudence. This marks the first published scholarly edition of the complete work, representing a significant contribution to the preservation of Islamic heritage and providing a vital resource for researchers and students. The ten-volume publication was announced this week and is the result of meticulous work by Dr. Murad Ashhili.

The project, funded by the Waqf Fund for Scientific and Cultural Development, aims to make rare and important Islamic scholarly texts more accessible. According to the ministry, this initiative is part of a broader effort to enrich the Islamic library and support the study of Islamic sciences within Qatar and internationally.

The Significance of Maliki Jurisprudence and the New Edition

Maliki jurisprudence is one of the four major schools of Islamic law, widely followed in North and West Africa, as well as parts of the Middle East. It is named after the 8th-century scholar Malik ibn Anas, and emphasizes the use of reason and local custom alongside the Quran and Sunnah. “Hashiyat Al-Rammassi” serves as a detailed commentary on Al-Tata’i’s explanation of “Mukhtasar Khalil,” a concise legal text considered central to the Maliki school.

The author, Muhammad Al-Mustafa bin Abdullah Al-Rammassi Al-Jaza’iri, was a prominent scholar whose work offers a nuanced understanding of complex legal issues. However, the text’s rarity and the lack of a comprehensive scholarly edition have historically limited its availability to those seeking in-depth study of Islamic law.

A Rigorous Scholarly Process

Dr. Ashhili’s work involved a thorough collation of the text against five distinct manuscript copies, chosen from a larger pool of approximately thirty reviewed manuscripts. This process ensured the highest level of accuracy and fidelity to the original work. The ministry highlighted the importance of this meticulous approach in preserving the integrity of the text.

Additionally, the edition includes extensive footnotes, additions, and scholarly commentary, providing context and clarification for modern readers. Comprehensive technical indexes have also been incorporated to facilitate research and allow students to easily locate specific topics and rulings within the extensive text. This feature is expected to be particularly valuable for advanced study of fiqh.

The Waqf Fund for Scientific and Cultural Development plays a crucial role in supporting projects that promote Islamic knowledge. Its funding of this publication demonstrates a commitment to preserving and disseminating the intellectual heritage of the Islamic world. The fund’s broader portfolio includes support for research, translation, and the publication of other significant Islamic texts.

The publication of “Hashiyat Al-Rammassi” comes at a time of increasing interest in classical Islamic scholarship. Scholars and students are increasingly turning to these foundational texts to gain a deeper understanding of the origins and development of Islamic legal thought. This renewed focus is driven, in part, by a desire to address contemporary challenges through the lens of traditional Islamic wisdom.

The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has not specified a timeline for the distribution of the ten-volume set, but it is expected to be made available to major Islamic libraries and research institutions. Further details regarding potential public access and digital availability are anticipated in the coming months. Observers will be watching to see how this edition impacts research and scholarship within the Maliki school of thought and the broader field of Islamic studies.

The long-term impact of this project will likely depend on its reception within the academic community and the extent to which it stimulates further research into the rich tradition of Islamic jurisprudence. The ministry’s commitment to preserving and promoting Islamic heritage suggests that similar initiatives may be forthcoming.
