A landmark exhibition, Islamic art, has opened at the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, showcasing over 80 masterpieces from the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Doha, Qatar. “Islamic Art: A Journey of Splendor” offers a comprehensive look at 1,400 years of artistic and cultural development across a vast geographical area, from Spain to China. The exhibition, which runs through October 11, 2026, represents the first major presentation of the MIA’s collection in South Korea.

A Collaborative EffortThe Significance of the Collection

A press preview on November 21, 2025, brought together dignitaries and representatives from both museums, including Qatar’s Ambassador to Korea, H.E. Khalid Ebrahim Al-Hamar, and the directors of MIA and NMK, Shaika Nasser Al-Nassr and You Hong June, respectively. The exhibition is currently on view in the National Museum of Korea’s World Art Gallery and aims to foster cultural exchange and understanding between Qatar and South Korea.

Exploring the Rich History of Islamic Art

The exhibition features a diverse range of artifacts, including intricately designed Quranic manuscripts, vibrant ceramics, delicate glassware, luxurious textiles, and sophisticated scientific instruments. These objects illustrate the evolution of Islamic art and its influences, shaped by trade, scholarship, and artistic innovation. The collection highlights the significant contributions of Islamic civilization to various fields of knowledge and artistry.

A Collaborative Effort

The collaboration between the MIA and NMK underscores a growing trend of international museum partnerships designed to share cultural heritage with wider audiences. According to Shaika Nasser Al-Nassr, the exhibition reflects Qatar Museums’ commitment to global exchange and mutual appreciation. This initiative coincides with the 20th anniversary of Qatar Museums, signifying a milestone in the nation’s cultural diplomacy efforts.

You Hong June emphasized the importance of introducing Islamic culture through this partnership. He expressed hope that visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the historical and artistic achievements of Islamic civilization and appreciate the value of cultural diversity and coexistence. The exhibition provides a platform for dialogue and learning about a culture often misrepresented or misunderstood.

The Significance of the Collection

The objects on display demonstrate the breadth of artistic expression within the Islamic world. From the geometric patterns and calligraphy found in Islamic architecture to the intricate designs of Persian carpets, the exhibition showcases a unique aesthetic sensibility. Additionally, the inclusion of scientific instruments reveals the advancements made in fields like astronomy, mathematics, and medicine during the Islamic Golden Age.

The exhibition also highlights the interconnectedness of cultures throughout history. The influence of Middle Eastern art can be seen in various forms across Asia and Europe, demonstrating the extensive trade routes and intellectual exchange that characterized the medieval and early modern periods. However, the exhibition also acknowledges the diverse regional variations within Islamic art, reflecting the unique cultural contexts in which it developed.

The selection of pieces from the MIA’s collection for this exhibition is particularly noteworthy. The MIA, established in 2008, houses one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Islamic art, spanning three continents and fourteen centuries. Its holdings include masterpieces from Spain, North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia. The museum’s focus on preserving and promoting Islamic art has established it as a leading cultural institution.

Looking ahead, the success of “Islamic Art: A Journey of Splendor” may pave the way for future collaborations between the MIA and other international museums. The long-term impact of the exhibition on public perception of Islamic heritage remains to be seen, but it represents a significant step towards fostering cross-cultural understanding. Further analysis of visitor engagement and feedback will likely inform future exhibition planning and outreach initiatives.
