In today’s business landscape, leaders are expected to possess not only the traditional skills of communication and financial management but also emotional intelligence to foster an empathetic organizational culture. Research has shown that employees under empathic leaders tend to be more innovative and engaged in their work. Unfortunately, recent weather events in the UAE have highlighted a lack of empathy in some leadership approaches, with reports of employees being forced to work despite challenging circumstances caused by heavy rainfall. In light of this, it is crucial for leaders to prioritize empathy and support their employees, especially during difficult times.

For leaders looking to cultivate empathy in their leadership style, there are several key steps they can take. Firstly, being an active listener is essential in creating a safe space for employees to express their thoughts and feelings. This fosters trust and psychological safety within the organization. Additionally, leaders should show compassion towards personal distress by putting themselves in their employees’ shoes and considering their perspectives before making decisions. Promoting work-life balance and communicating empathetically are also vital in demonstrating empathy towards employees.

As the incoming generation of employees, particularly Gen Z, values wellbeing and work-life balance, leaders should prioritize supporting their employees’ holistic wellbeing through regular check-ins and providing necessary tools for success. Communicating with empathy and offering words of reassurance during challenging times can go a long way in supporting employees. Taking appropriate actions, such as offering emotional support, providing flexible work options, and adjusting schedules to accommodate individual needs, shows that leaders are truly invested in the well-being of their team members.

Eleni Anastasova, the Communities and Market Operations Manager at CIPD, a professional organization for HR and people development, emphasizes the importance of building strong communities and shaping external outreach in the Mena region. By working closely with senior professionals and leading organizations, Anastasova aims to promote empathy and good leadership practices in the workplace. Ultimately, demonstrating empathy as a leader not only benefits individual employees but also contributes to a more positive and productive organizational culture overall.
