The recent global internet disruption caused by a technical failure has had a significant economic impact that experts estimate could be worth millions, if not billions, of dollars. The disruption affected various sectors including airlines, telecommunications, media outlets, banks, and major trading markets, leading to operational disruptions and financial losses. Companies such as Microsoft and CrowdStrike were among the most affected, with concerns raised about the readiness of their systems and cybersecurity vulnerabilities revealed by the outage.

Dr. Abdullah Al Khater, an expert in economics and information technology, highlighted the impact of the outage on companies like Microsoft and CrowdStrike, leading to reputational damage and significant costs for affected parties using their services and applications. The disruption caused long hours of downtime for critical services like airports, hospitals, and travel, raising cybersecurity concerns among markets and consumers. Dr. Al Khater also emphasized the need for governments and decision-makers to address cybersecurity challenges beyond what companies like Microsoft and CrowdStrike have provided.

Mohamed Alam, an expert in information and communication technology, provided insights on the internet outage, attributing the malfunction to a mandatory update by cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. The outage primarily affected users of Microsoft 365 applications and services, causing devices to display a blank blue screen and lock users out of their operating systems. Alam stressed the importance of prioritizing information system protection, cybersecurity, and business continuity strategies to prevent paralysis and protect against cyber threats that can impact global economies.

Businessman Mansour Al Naemi echoed the sentiments of the experts, emphasizing the negative impact of the outage on businesses, especially those reliant on Microsoft and CrowdStrike applications. He highlighted the importance of enhancing cybersecurity mechanisms to maintain production, storage, and marketing systems in the face of unexpected shocks, ensuring the economic sustainability of nations in an interconnected global economy. The need for collective efforts to establish robust systems capable of addressing challenges and mitigating the effects of technical failures or cyberattacks was also emphasized.

Microsoft has acknowledged the impact of the outage and is working on rerouting affected traffic to alternative systems to alleviate the disruption and restore service availability. Despite the significant disruptions reported by airlines and airports, the company noted an improvement in service availability as they work to resolve the issues caused by the internet disruption. The global internet outage serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing cybersecurity and implementing measures to safeguard information systems and protect against potential disruptions that can have far-reaching economic consequences.
